2 PEOPLE CAUGHT OPERATING ILLEGAL ONLINE GAMING SITE

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Twelve people suspected of involvement in illegal online gaming operations were arrested today, February 16, in an exclusive Parañaque City subdivision after a month-long surveillance, according to the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).

PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Alejandro H. Tengco said the arrests were made by the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) and the Anti-Cybercrime Group of the Philippine National Police (PNP) together with the PAGCOR monitoring team.

“The raiders were armed with a warrant to search, seize and examine operations of computer data against the suspects who were caught red-handed while operating the illegal online gaming platform https://www.tbb888.com or the Big Bet,” Chairman Tengco said.

The illegal gaming site has been operating games like slot machines, live casino, e-sports, among others. Authorities seized from the suspects eleven computer sets, 21 mobile phones, 2 ipads, 6 laptops and flash drives, according to the PAGCOR chief.

Onsite examination revealed that the confiscated gadgets contain evidence of the group’s illegal online activities, said PAGCOR Senior Vice President for Security and Monitoring Cluster Raul Villanueva.

The raid was conducted inside BF Northwest Subdivision, an affluent enclave whose residents include some of the most prominent political and business leaders in Parañaque.

Mr. Villanueva said cases will be filed against the suspects before the Parañaque Regional Trial Court.

“The operation was part of our unified efforts to intensify the fight against illegal online gambling because we have a marching order from PAGCOR Chairman Alejandro Tengco to put a stop to these illegal activities,” Mr. Villanueva said.

“We will continuously collaborate with law enforcement authorities such as the PNP and even the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency to put a stop to these,” he said.

“We advise the public to stop patronizing illegal online gaming sites and instead play on legal platforms to protect themselves. Unfortunantely, most of the victims of these illegal sites are Filipino bettors.

“We are also working closely with the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center under the Department of Information and Communications Technology because we have a lot more targets under surveillance,” he added.

According to Mr. Villanueva, close to 5,000 illegal online gaming sites were operating in the country at one time but 80% of these were already blocked.

“We need to consistently monitor and report them to authorities not only to protect the bettors but to also ensure that revenues from regulated gaming are channeled back to the government for its nation-building programs,” he said.

PAGCor Photo Contest Returns with ‘Harvest Time’ Theme for 2024

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCor) is bringing back its popular photography competition this year with a new category and, more importantly, bigger prizes to lure more amateur and professional photographers into joining the competition.

With the ‘Harvest Time’ theme, the PAGCor Photography Contest 2024 aims to showcase the Filipino’s strength of character, patience and hard work in the fields that are often rewarded with bountiful harvest and more fulfilling lives.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for PAGCor, Alejandro Tengco, said this year’s photo contest will feature a new category – Drone – that has become very popular in photography because of its ability to capture breathtaking views from the air.

“As we promised last year during the awards ceremony for the PAGCor Photo Contest 2023, we have also increased our cash prizes for this year’s winners in all categories,” Tengco said.

He said the contest will accept entries from February 15 to July 31, 2024, through the PAGCor website at www. PAGCor. ph/PhotoCon2024.

Tengco said this year’s contest theme pays homage to crop and livestock farmers, flower and aquaculture growers, fishermen and others whose harvests help ensure food security not only for their families but also for the country.

“They are crucial to our country’s development and sustainability,” Tengco said. “While our contest theme aims to capture the raw beauty of the countryside during harvest season, it also reflects our gratitude and support to farmers and fishers who are the real unsung heroes of our time.”

To further widen the scope of the competition, Tengco said PAGCor likewise lowered the participants’ age eligibility from 18 to 16 years old so that students and younger people will be encouraged to take up photography as a creative hobby.

“While we want to recognize the talent of our professional and hobbyist photographers, we also want to hone the talent and creativity of our youth,” Tengco said. “We want to use this contest to showcase their skills and motivate them to develop their craft further.”

Tengco said PAGCor has also increased total cash prizes for the contest from Php1.6 million last year to Php2.23 million this year.

The PAGCor Photography Contest 2024 Conventional Category will feature photos taken using all types of digital cameras like single lens reflex, compact, point-and-shoot, bridge, mirrorless and rugged. The Mobile Category will cover entries taken using mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, action cameras, 360 cameras and the like while the newly-added Drone Category will cover aerial photos taken using drone-mounted cameras.

PAGCor will select eight grand winners for each category with the Conventional Category winners taking home Php100,00 each plus a trophy. Meanwhile, the eight grand winners for the Mobile and Drone Categories will take home Php50,000 each plus a trophy.

There will also be 24 non-winning grand finalists who will get consolation prizes of P35,000 for the Conventional Category while Php20,000 will be awarded in the Mobile and Drone Categories. A special cash prize of P10,000 per category will also be awarded.

Timor-Leste, one of the strongest democracies in southeast Asia, is taking further strides to become a new jurisdiction in the online betting and gaming sector as complement to regimes in Malta and the Isle of Man.

The Virtual Gaming Association (VGA) of Timor-Leste hosted a special industry event on Friday, February 2, that revealed further details about the proposed regulatory framework.

The VGA will be recommending to the Timor-Leste government that it issues both B2C and B2B licences, regulation be modelled on Malta and the Isle of Man rules and licences be issued in the second or third quarter of this year. It was also confirmed that the VGA will be conducting a consultation process with the industry to further refine its regulatory approach.

“It was a great honour to host an event in London representing Timor-Leste and welcoming President Ramos-Horta as speaker,” the Chairman of the VGA, Richard Leather, said. “Our focus at the VGA is to support Timor-Leste in becoming a jurisdiction that meets and exceeds best practices in online gambling regulation and licensing. Moreover, we look forward to speaking with responsible operators and suppliers looking for a serious, safe and secure jurisdiction for their business.”

Timorese President Jose Ramos-Horta, who was on an official visit to London, spoke at the event about the economic opportunities currently available in Timor-Leste. The country is set to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2025 and is currently making efforts to diversify its economy including in the digital and IT sectors with growing interest from investors from around the world.
