FASHION AND ESPORTS COLLIDE AS CHAMPION LAUNCHES CAPSULE COLLECTION WITH FNATIC

Heritage apparel brand, Champion has collaborated with Fnatic on a capsule collection fusing together the worlds of fashion and esports.

The limited-edition collection is comprised of four hoodie designs, each inspired by the ancient elemental concepts of Earth, Air, Fire and Water. With a drop of just 400 hoodies, the elements represent different playing styles and character personalities commonly found in the world’s most popular games.

Representing each of the themes is an entourage of Fnatic ambassadors bringing their own flavour to the capsule collection from a variety of mediums including music and gaming.

Embodying the Water faction is Che Lingo, one of South London’s most credible musical names. With his critically acclaimed, award nominated album “The Worst Generation” (released on Idris Elba’s 7Wallace Label), a litany of tracks featured in leading games such as FIFA 22 and NBA2K, and featuring thrice on the Jujutsu Kaisen Anime Soundtrack; Che’s vocals will be familiar to regular gamers.

Talking on the importance of self-expression in creative formats, Che Lingo commented “Making music and finding new ways to present real tangible stories is what drives me creatively. Web3 technology platform Nefta has announced a $1 million investment from Picus Capital. The company currently works with games studios at different stages of development, and will use the investment to scale the team and onboard more gaming companies in the future.

Nefta was founded this year by tech industry veterans Geeshan Willink, Fernando Pernica and Kai Goldmann, who bring first-hand experience in building their own Web3 games, alongside 40 combined years in gaming, finance and adtech startups. The team has set out to become a leader in the Web3 space, with the ultimate aim of solidifying the potential of Web3 technologies as a key driver in the future of game development and as a way to take gamer engagement, ownership and monetisation to the next level.

Haste Arcade has just closed its $1.5 million seed round. The fundraising was oversubscribed, Haste was able to exceed the $1 million target that it had set for itself.

“We were originally seeking $1MM to lay a good solid foundation for the product/vision and then have some working capital to start testing our assumptions around product/market fit, specifically with marketing outside the ‘crypto’ community,” said Dan Wagner, the co-founder of Haste Arcade.

“After pitching the concept to a handful of investors, it became obvious that we weren’t the only ones thinking ILP™ Gaming could potentially become a ‘thing.’ We stopped pitching a couple of months ago but due to word of mouth and interest from other investors we were able to secure an additional $500K on top of the original goal bringing the total to $1.5MM,” he added.

The gaming industry

According to Wagner, there are several elements of the Haste Arcade that make investors confident in Haste’s future.

“First and foremost, the idea; its novel, it’s new, and it’s easy to understand. Get on the leaderboard. Get paid. It’s not rocket science by any means and at the same rate, it’s not hard to imagine something like ILP™ Gaming catching on and taking off.

“Secondly, the market. Online gaming is absolutely massive and even if you’re only able to capture a small fraction of the gamers in the world, you can build a business with millions or hundreds of millions of users.

“And finally, our team. It’s not our first rodeo, meaning, we’ve raised capital before and we’ve shown what it takes to build a business. Many don’t know this, but the four co-founders of Haste, Inc. have been working together for basically seven years at this point. We move fast, are great at failing, iterating, pivoting, and quite frankly just getting stuff done and keeping the ball rolling.

“Add in the rest of the folks we’ve brought on and our core team of 8 forms a solid foundation. When you realize the core team’s skill set and experience, you realize that in a lot of ways, it’s not your average startup. Since we started building beta, everything has been done first class. If we are right, Haste Arcade has uncovered an entirely new category in gaming, and there is most likely some money to be made from being the market leader for something like that,” said Wagner.

The lead investor in the round was Jonathan Cogley, the CEO of Logic Boost Labs. Cogley has a long and successful history in the cybersecurity field and recently sold his cybersecurity company Thycotic for $1.4 billion. Now, he spends his time at Logic Boost Labs, a San Diego-based accelerator that invests in early-stage leaders.

Other notable investors that participated in the seed round include Thomas Vu, who formerly worked at Riot Games helping bring League of Legends to market; Anthony Borquez, the CEO of Grab Games and a professor at the University of Southern California; Craig Brennan, the Silicon Valley veteran with decades of experience in software leadership/management that sits as the CEO of private and public companies; and Brad Powers the CIO of Passport.

Seeing new investors throw their hats in the ring is a positive sign. Investors provide companies with the resources they need to succeed because they see value in the company’s business model and have the belief that their business will be worth significantly more in the future. Businesses like Haste that find a way to implement innovative ideas that have the potential to revolutionize an industry will always be sought after by investors.

The fact that the latest haste fundraising round was oversubscribed confirms that theory and supports the idea that there is a tremendous amount of value that can be realized by the businesses using the Bitcoin blockchain as a core component of the app, service, or experience that they are creating.

Code Coven, the first global award-winning game development accelerator for underrepresented talent, is using the grant provided by Unity’s Charitable Fund alongside support from two of the biggest names in gaming to launch its latest “Code Coven Create: The Solstice Program.” The program, which is being supported by Unity’s Charitable Fund, Riot Games and Xbox, aims to guide 10 teams through their development journey in creating social impact themed games with the goal of launching them commercially to prospective investors, publishers and studios.

Unity’s Charitable Fund earlier this year, generously provided a grant of $100,000, enabling the Introduction to Game Making by Code Coven course. This new program springs into action on the back of the original program’s success, which empowered novice game developers with structured guidance, mentorship and financial support.

“Code Coven Create: The Solstice Program” runs for 12 weeks from 8 August to 28 October.

The course is open to under-represented groups within the industry who want to learn prototyping. The course provides guidance from Code Coven, Unity’s Charitable Fund, Riot Games, and Xbox partners and mentors.

Selected participants will apply within teams of up to five members and will be building interactive experiences including games, education platforms, VR, and XR outlets which are centered around social-impact. Unity has made some great commitments to social impact and defines it as “focusing the power of our talent, technology, and grants to empower anyone to foster a more sustainable and inclusive world.”

With social impact being at the centre, the “Code Coven Create: The Solstice Program” also aims to:

Teach developers how to effectively run a Sprint Zero

Empower developers to design and build prototypes that focus on social impact

For each team to walk away with a prototype that will set them up for future funding opportunities.

Democratise access to lesser-known topics, such as financing

Reach developers of the global majority

A new study from Mozillion has revealed the mobile phone apps which are the fastest growing in 2022 so far, as well as those which have decreased in popularity most since 2021. Researchers from the mobile phone marketplace analysed data for more than 500 of the most popular apps currently on the market, to reveal which have shot up (or down) in popularity with mobile phone users. The study also revealed the mobile gaming apps which have increased and decreased in popularity most over the past six months. 

The top 20 fastest growing mobile games in 2022  

Delivery game Deliver It 3D was the mobile game which has shot up the charts most, increasing by 997 positions in the App Store over the past six months. Hugely popular mobile games including Angry Bird, Football Manager, Wordle and HeadsUp! also featured in the top ten fastest growing mobile games in 2022 so far.

The top 20 mobile games that have decreased in popularity most in 2022 

Once-popular games Traffic Cop 3D and Paper Fold were found to be amongst the apps that have seen the biggest decreases in popularity in 2022 so far, dropping between 996 and 999 spots on the App Store charts since 2021.

The most consistent mobile games of 2022 

While some apps are only destined to spend a short time ruling the top positions of the App Store charts, others have remained consistent as we transitioned into the new year of 2022. Hugely popular mobile gaming app Minecraft remained in the top five of the charts over the six-month period, as did popular pizza game Papa’s Pizzeria.
