Unibet and SEF to Offer Safer Gambling Training Courses

One thousand active professional football players and their coaches will undertake online training courses in player responsibility and safer gambling. The training comes as a result of collaboration between Unibet and Swedish Elite Football (SEF) and is a part of the sponsorship agreement for the two Swedish leagues Allsvenskan and Superettan.

As the main partner to Swedish Elite Football (SEF), Unibet will work together with SEF and the 32 male elite football clubs that are represented in Allsvenskan and Superettan leagues, to educate players and coaches in safer gambling. The online training will now start after the season has ended and the Integrity Officer of each club will ensure the training is conducted.

“During our partnership with Swedish Elite Football (SEF), we have made several efforts to fight match-fixing and harmful gambling. This training is only one example of the work we do with SEF and we will continue our great efforts throughout the contract period,” Philip Lagström, Country Manager Unibet Sweden, said.

“For us, it is very important to share and contribute our knowledge through this sponsorship. Unibet wants a sustainable gambling industry and our ambition is to reach zero per cent revenue derived from harmful gambling by 2023,” Lagström added.

“For some individuals, in society as well as within the athletic environment, gambling can, unfortunately, become a problem. BOS rejects austerity measures for gambling advertising in Sweden

The Swedish Trade Association for Online Gaming (BOS) submits its opinion to the Ministry of Finance on its proposed austerity measures for gambling advertising. The Government proposes that gambling advertising should go from being regulated on the basis of a requirement for moderation to special moderation.

The online gaming industry association – BOS – is critical of the proposal and calls on the government to withdraw it.

– This is another proposal from the government that plays the unlicensed gaming companies in Sweden straight into the hands. The trump card of the Swedish-licensed gaming companies vis-à-vis the unlicensed has been the opportunity to market themselves and thus channel gaming consumers into the safe Swedish licensing system. If the possibility of doing so becomes even more difficult, the leakage out of the Swedish licensing system – already today 25 percent of the turnover for online casinos leaks out of the licensing system – will fall to even more critically low levels. In the name of consumer protection, this proposal must be withdrawn, says Gustaf Hoffstedt.

Paf acquires two Swedish licensed companies

Paf is acquiring the two Swedish licensed gaming companies Speedy Ltd and Speedy Originals from Hero Gaming. The companies run the gaming sites Speedy Casino, Speedybet and Speedyspel. With the purchase, Paf will become one of the six largest gaming companies in Sweden.

“We want to grow in Sweden and we have a determined ambition to be a leading player in the Swedish licensed market,” says Paf’s CEO Christer Fahlstedt.

Top six in Sweden

Hero Gaming was founded in 2013 and they have been successful in the Swedish market with the Speedy brand gaming sites.

“We see the deal as a good win-win strategy, in that now Hero Gaming can focus more on the global market. It feels good that it is Paf who is buying our Swedish business, they have a long-term strategy and they are well-known for their responsible gaming work,” says Tomas Bäckman, CEO of Hero Gaming.

Paf will become one of the six largest gaming companies in Sweden after the purchase. This is a position that Paf has been deliberately seeking.

“This acquisition shows that we have faith in the future of the Swedish market and we also have the capacity to acquire the companies that strengthen us,” says Christer Fahlstedt.

The loss limit will be implemented

The three Speedy gaming sites will implement Paf’s comparatively tough guidelines for responsible gaming. Among other things, Paf’s annual mandatory loss limit of EUR 20,000 / SEK 200,000 will be introduced.

“We do not have an interest in taking over the gaming sites unless their customers are largely at a gaming level that we accept. But of course, customers will notice that we value responsible gaming very strongly, to the same level of responsible gaming that we have on Paf’s other gaming sites,” says Christer Fahlstedt.

SpeedySpel, SpeedyBet and SpeedyCasino will continue to operate under their current brands in the Swedish market.

The founders of Arrowhead Game Studios, the team behind one of the world’s biggest international game successes with the game Magicka, is now investing in the company Mind Detonator whose business concept is to capture talent at a very early stage and build the next generation of gaming developers far from the big cities.

Mind Detonator is a unique investment in gaming companies in the early stages. It is a combination of local support, local investors and international gaming developers that help each other to create the best conditions for game developers to succeed.

Quality of life and full focus on the game

Mind Detonator has an ambition to open Game Villages in different countries’ rural areas to offer financing for developer teams starting in the Nordic region. They offer opportunities for them to build their games full time, without traditional incubator requirements to learn how to run a business at the same time. Now, the entire working day can be spent creating the game – and in their spare time, teams can recharge and find new energy in the Arctic environment.

In October 2021, our first Game Village in the city of Jörn in northern Sweden opens. An investment that is influenced by the demands of the new age with anti-urbanization and sustainability with a local train station and bus commuting to the ski resort not far away. There in Jörn, five teams with up to five people each will start their journey. It is, however, still possible to apply. In the long run, Mind Detonator aims to open more Game Villages, in other countries, and make at least 15 investments per year.

“Our first step will be to bring in talent and teams from the Nordics to validate the concept, and second step will be to aim for more Game Villages in more countries to be able to help international gaming teams regardless of country” says gaming veteran Michael Stenmark who is now actively working to find talent for Mind Detonator’s first investments.
