Innovative Pilot Tackling Gambling Harm in Ballarat

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Andrews Labor Government is ensuring Ballarat locals experiencing the devastating impacts of gambling harm can get tailored treatment and support services with an innovative new programme being piloted in the region.

Minister for Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Liquor Regulation Melissa Horne, Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle and Member for Wendouree Juliana Addison launched the pilot, which equips allied health professions with a new way of screening patients to determine the best treatments to get them back on track.

It will increase access to, and training for, practitioners who operate within the mental health, alcohol and other drugs sectors and are treating people vulnerable to gambling harm.

Following feedback from Gambler’s Help service funded through the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation, the programme has been developed to improve pathways for people seeking treatment for co-existing conditions, such as a mental health issue in addition to gambling harm.

It starts with a simple question by a health practitioner to their client about whether they gamble and progresses through the appropriate pathway for each person from there.

The pilot programme will increase awareness of gambling harm among healthcare professions and remove barriers faced by people seeking help – such as stigma.

The trial uses the latest evidence to improve outcomes for the Ballarat community, with the lessons to inform future programmes across the state.

The training will be led by clinical consultant Dr Jane Oakes and the Foundation’s Principal Clinical Advisor, Tony Clarkson and provided to practitioners at Ballarat Community Health, Child and Family Services and the Salvation Army Health Services.

BULLDOGS AND RABBITOHS SAY NO TO SPORTS BETTING ADVERTISING, YES TO FAMILY FRIENDLY GAMES

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Sports betting ads were off the agenda at Sunday’s NRL match between the Bulldogs and Rabbitohs, with both teams saying no to wagering sponsors.

The two teams recently partnered with GambleAware’s Reclaim the Game initiative, which sees sporting clubs reject sports betting advertising, challenging the normalisation of betting in sport while educating staff, players and fans about the risks associated with gambling.

Director of the Office of Responsible Gambling Natalie Wright said it is fantastic to have fans walk into the stadium and be there for the game, where both teams have said no to sponsorships and the advertising that goes with it.

“Betting companies are increasingly using sport to promote their product. Reclaim the Game challenges this and raises awareness of the risks of gambling.

“The NRL fan base is huge and gambling advertising is everywhere, including at sporting games and on TV, which means if you’re a supporter you usually can’t avoid seeing it,” Ms Wright said.

“On Sunday fans and families got back to what the game is about – without letting a bet take them away from the match.

“It’s encouraging to see an NRL match with two teams who both stepped up to say no to sports betting advertising and we’re sure the Bulldogs and Rabbitohs fans appreciated the atmosphere.”

Rabbitohs CEO, Blake Solly, said, “Our community plays such a big role in our club, so we felt Reclaim the Game was a campaign we could support to reduce community exposure to sports betting advertising.

“We believe we play a style of football that entertains everyone in the family and that there isn’t the need to have a bet on the game to enjoy it,” Mr Solly said.

“We’re proud to support Reclaim the Game and their desire to effect cultural change around sports betting advertising.”

Bulldogs CEO, Aaron Warburton, said Rugby League is one of the most entertaining sporting experiences on offer.

“It is a great spectacle for fans, players and staff to enjoy sport in its purest form, without any distractions or the temptation to gamble,” Mr Warburton said.

“It was pleasing to see Sunday’s clash between two of the game’s proudest clubs taking place without the presence of sports betting advertising.”

While the NRL has wagering sponsorships at a code-level, as do multiple NRL teams and some stadiums, the Rabbitohs and Bulldogs have committed to eliminating betting advertising wherever they can.

Sky Racing (Sky) has secured the rights to broadcast and distribute Victorian greyhound racing for the next four years, heralding a new and innovative era in the way the sport is showcased to fans and punters.

The partnership with Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) will grow the profile of the sport, create additional content across the Sky Racing network and drive wagering growth throughout TAB’s digital and retail networks.

The partnership, which appoints Sky as GRV’s domestic, digital and international vision broadcaster and distributor, will feature:

  • An increase in air time for Victorian greyhound racing on Sky Racing.
  • Dedicated greyhound showcase content.
  • New digital initiatives which will make it easier to access Victorian greyhound racing on an expanded number of digital platforms.

Tabcorp General Manager of Sky Operations, Adam Brownlee, said the partnership would grow the sport and create more opportunities for punters.

“We’re thrilled to be appointed as GRV’s vision distribution and broadcast partner,” he said.

“Sky and GRV have a longstanding partnership and the new agreement will strengthen our relationship. Most importantly it’s a win for punters, industry participants and our almost two million viewers every year whether they be in pubs or clubs, at home or watching via our newly refreshed website, the TAB App or on Sky Racing Active.

“We’re really looking forward to working closely with GRV to be innovative in the way the sport is broadcast and bring punters closer to the action. This deal is a tremendous opportunity to grow the sport and increase content on our network for greyhound racing fans.”

GRV Acting Chief Executive Officer Stuart Laing said the partnership would grow the sport and its popularity with punters as a wagering product of choice nationally and internationally.

“This partnership will provide new opportunities to expand access to vision for fans and punters, bringing them closer to our product and better promote our feature events, star greyhounds and participants,” he said.

“We are looking forward to working even more closely with Sky Racing to be more innovative in the way we showcase our sport to punters.”

Mr Brownlee said the enhanced exposure would also increase wagering opportunities for TAB.

“We have the most integrated customer experience in Australia and Sky Racing’s coverage is a critical component in growing TAB’s market share. This partnership will give punters access to more information from the best form analysts and create more interest in punting on greyhound racing as TAB prepares to launch a new App.”

IAGR MELBOURNE 2022: CALL FOR SPEAKERS

A Kickstart for Collaboration conference, Call for Speakers now open: IAGR 2022 Call for Speakers: Registration and Call for Speakers: Pamphlet

The International Association of Gaming Regulators are proud to announce that the Call for Speakers to their eagerly anticipated annual conference, Melbourne 2022: A Kickstart for Collaboration is now open.

To be held in Melbourne, Australia from 17 to 20 October 2022, IAGR 2022: A Kickstart for Collaboration will build on the wide-ranging discussions IAGR delegates had in Boston, at the 2021 conference, on disruption and sparking global regulatory innovation.

Held in conjunction with host partners, the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation, the IAGR 2022 conference is focused on continuing the theme of disruption and sparking regulatory innovation to advance the efficiency and effectiveness of gambling regulation globally. The event will draw from all areas in the gaming sector, including updates on international gaming, distributed gaming, igaming / ilottery, esports, and more.

“IAGR and the Board of Trustees are excited to be able to bring members together once again,” IAGR President Dr Jason Lane said.

“As we are all living through the greatest disruptive event of our generation, the IAGR 2022 conference will look at the lessons learnt through this time of disruption and the lens of innovation to see how members can help us point to a more front-foot regulatory future.”

Acting CEO of the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) Scott May said, “We’re honoured IAGR has chosen Melbourne to host this year’s conference.

“The conference is a great opportunity to share our experiences and learn from our respective responses to the various regulatory challenges we each faced, and continue to face, during the global pandemic.

“The past two years have been an unprecedented time for gambling regulators from all jurisdictions. We’ve had to think on our feet and amend the way we work, often at very short notice, in a period of great change.

“The conference is also an excellent forum to share regulatory best practices, identify the challenges of the future, discuss the latest research and industry trends and build on our combined efforts to ensure the effective and efficient regulation of gambling around the world.

“My VGCCC colleagues and I are looking forward to welcoming our international regulatory colleagues and government officials to our great city in October 2022.”

With the call for speakers closing on 6 March 2022, speakers are being asked to consider a series of questions, including: How have the last two years changed your way of thinking? Where has it strengthened your resolve on what we knew before? How has it encouraged us to throw off old thinking, processes or policies and to best reflect the cultural, technological and consumer change we have witnessed?

Potential speakers are able to register their submission and presentation here.
