Government of India officially recognises Esports as a part of “multisport event” – Reaction From Indian Esports Industry

The Indian government has officially recognised esports in the country. Esports will now be a part of the “multisports event” category in India under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and sports.

Link to the official website where this has been posted – https://egazette.nic.in/(S(fvf5fenrdf0ryrntladsbnp5))/Default.aspx
In regard to this recent big news, this cleared the air that Esports must not be clubbed under the umbrella term “Gaming”. Esports (Electronic sports) is a competitive sport where esports athletes use their physical and mental abilities to compete in certain genres of video games in a virtual, electronic environment.
Below are some of the quotes of the esports industry stakeholders:
Mr Lokesh Suji, Director, Esports Federation of India & Vice President of the Asian Esports Federation (AESF):

Great news for us to begin the New Year. We have been constantly working on establishing the difference between esports and iGaming, and finally, our efforts have been fulfilled. We welcome this announcement by our government under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Modi ji, which will open new avenues to pour in more investment opportunities in this booming industry. From now onwards, we will have to build the proper infrastructure, training facilities and coaching for our young esports athletes. Only a short time until we see Esports being placed in the same league as cricket, football, basketball, etc. and having similar fan power, scale and craze.

With the latest announcement and India recently competing for medals at the inaugural Esports Asian Games, people are shaking off the misconceptions linked with esports as a passion or career option. The year 2023 beholds greater opportunities for esports and we are anticipating more favourable developments, only making it bigger. It surely has been a great year for Indian esports.

Rohit Jagasia, Founder & CEO, Revenant Esports:

Today can be said to be the greatest day in Indian Esports history. The collective efforts of the entire gaming fraternity along with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and sports have finally reaped its rewards. We can now proudly consider Esports a legitimate sport in India. This revolutionary decision will not only transform the country’s gaming landscape in terms of improved infrastructure, funding, exposure and providing education about the sector but will also put India on the global Esports map as a force to be reckoned with. The year 2023 is undoubtedly going to be the start of the country’s golden era in Esports and with the Asian Games as well as the Olympic Esports Week also set to take place soon, there is a lot of success expected to be in store for the entire community.

Mr Animesh Agarwal, Founder & CEO, 8bit Creatives & an ex-esports athlete:
The entire Esports fraternity in India will be rejoicing with this welcome news which has certainly been a result of the gaming community’s collective efforts spanning over the last few years. Esports have already been considered as a medal sport in the Olympics and Asian games and this news will further boost the sport in the country as it was long overdue. The industry inclusive of developers, players and creators as a whole is growing at a fast pace and to come full-circle this recognition will be very thriving for the industry. It presents a clean slate for gamers and proves to neigh-sayers that Esports is, in fact, a serious sport that deserves to be recognised for its skilled and hard-working players who will be competing against some of the world’s best players and put India on the map of professional gaming countries.

At 8Bit Creatives & S8UL, this is a defining moment for us. The future of Indian esports holds great things from our side. We are committed to nurturing and supporting more and more esports players in our country, starting from ground zero with a refined vision of putting India on the map globally.

Bengaluru-headquartered blockchain-based esports fan engagement startup STAN has announced that they have successfully concluded a first-of-its-kind user engagement activity in the form of an in-person Bootcamp visit arranged in collaboration with India’s leading esports team GodLike Esports for the young esports fans in India. As a part of this initiative, 4 fans belonging from different parts of India, named Ansh Sahu, Taufeek khan, Armaan Khan, and Shaik Mohammed Younus, were being facilitated a day-long tour to the GodLike Bootcamp in Mumbai – the largest and grandest gaming facility in India as of today, where these fans got the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet their esports idols, including celebrated esports players like Jonathan “JONATHAN” AmaralAbhishek “ZGOD” Choudhary, Arshpreet “GiLL” Singh and Arjun “SHADOW” Mandhalkar, among others.

This activity (Bootcamp tour) was a part of STAN’s ongoing digital giveaway event named STAN FanQuest – where they are giving away a plethora of exciting prizes worth upto INR 25 lakhs to a select group of fans, which includes Bootcamp tours, Instagram Live sessions with creators, talkshows and signed merch from creators, among other exciting rewards or perks.

These four fans who had the chance to visit the GodLike Bootcamp were the ones who were previously granted early-access to the JONATHAN Limited Digital Collectible (LDC) via STAN mobile app, which included the incredible fan perk of meeting India’s most-popular BGMI player Jonathan  personally at the GodLike Bootcamp. Notably, STAN had, earlier this year, announced a long-term collaboration with GodLike Esports, as a part of which the JONATHAN LDCs were released on STAN’s platform. Besides, purchasing and owning the JONATHAN LDCs has also enabled the users to get access a wide range of other benefits such as exclusive in-app benefits, being a part of early access and discounted collectible sales on STAN, instant rewards on STAN, premier STAN Club access,  STAN’s upcoming FanFests’ access, and so on.

Speaking about the activity, Nauman Mulla, Co-Founder & COO, STAN commented, “It was a proud and happy moment for us to be able to take some of the fans (whom we like to call STANs) to visit the largest gaming facility in India, the GodLike Bootcamp located in Mumbai. At STAN, our constant endeavor is to provide our users and the esports enthusiast community at large with such thrilling and sought-after fan experiences, which a fan would not otherwise get to experience very often. In the longer run, we hope to unleash more fan experiences like this one. For example, we have soon planned to take more STAN users to similar valuable destinations including a tour of S8UL Bootcamp.”

Jonathan from GodLike Esports said, “It was a fantastic experience to meet, greet and play with my superfans at the GL Bootcamp. Big ups to STAN for facilitating this visit and bringing my fans closer to me and the other creators and gamers at GodLike Esports, and I’m looking forward to more such awesome fan engagements in the times to come. STAN and GodLike are both on a journey to uplift and revolutionize esports in India, and I’m glad and proud to be a key part of this mission.”

Armaan Khan (a fan) commented, “”It was an unforgettable experience to meet and play with the legendary Jonathan and other members from GodLike. It was like a dream-come-true moment as I met the creators whom I have admired for a very long time. I still cannot believe that this happened, and I’m extremely grateful to STAN for making this possible.”

During the Bootcamp tour, each of the fans received the wonderful opportunity to not just meet the nation’s leading esports athletes from titles like PUBG: NEW STATE, Call of Duty Mobile, and Battlegrounds Mobile India, as well as multiple content creators who were present at the Bootcamp, but also got to play on their favourite athletes’ and creators’ gaming setups and interact like never before with their esports idols. Furthermore, with a detailed tour of the Bootcamp facility facilitated especially for them, the fans were able to observe closely how a grand gaming facility is run, how esports players practice therein, their routine and their day-to-day activities, and much more. The tour ended with a dinner hosted for the fans along with the presence of the GodLike team members, followed by gifting the creators’-signed goodies and merchandise to the fans. All in all, the experience was like a dream-come-true for all the fans, with a couple of them even getting extremely emotional and/or taking inspiration to pursue esports as a professional career option.

Notably, the GodLike Bootcamp is a state-of-the-art facility spread over an area of 25,000 sq. ft., located in Mumbai, India, which houses the 40+ strong GodLike team, including the esports players, content creators and management team at GodLike. On the other hand, STAN has built a uniquely-crafted one-stop platform for the constantly growing pool of esports fans in India and the world to optimally engage, play and grow closer to their idols in the esports space. And they have already inked digital collectibles and/or NFT related partnerships with several leading esports athletes and esports teams/orgs in India.

Fnatic Announces Renewal of Partnership with Official Protein Snack Partner Jack Link’s

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Fnatic, one of the world’s oldest esports organisations, has today announced the renewal of its partnership with its official protein snack partner, Jack Link’s, a global leader in branded protein snacking and the world’s largest meat snack manufacturer.

The multi-year partnership was initially announced in January 2021, with Fnatic and Jack Link’s collaborating on branding campaigns and creative content aimed to grow awareness of the brand. The aim was to help cement Jack Link’s as the snack of choice in the gaming space by granting access to Fnatic’s massive network of fans and players.

This year’s renewal further reinforces the relationship and marks the start of a year of activations, enabling gamers of all levels to fuel their sessions. Jack Link’s will remain sleeve sponsor of official Fnatic team jerseys for the duration of the deal.

In the previous year, the partnership led to campaigns such as ‘BeefModeTopia’ and ‘BeefaLaResistance’, which required fans to rise up against poor snacking and show why Jack Link’s is the best sustenance to push through any gaming session. The latter activation reached over 9 million fans through online activations, a Fnatic X Jack Link’s booth at Gamescom Cologne 2022 and exciting giveaways surrounding Fnatic involvement at League of Legends Worlds 2022 and the IEM Rio Major.

Neil Walker, Senior Partnerships Manager at Fnatic, said: “It was exciting to announce Fnatic and Jack Link’s partnership two years ago, and it’s even more exciting to be able to confirm the renewal. The natural link between gaming and snacks is evident, and we’re constantly looking for innovative ways to encourage players and fans to snack in a way that won’t negatively affect their performance. The bonus with Jack Link’s is that the snacks are made with 100% beef, they’re low in fat and they’re high in natural proteins. They’ve been a revelation for our pro athletes and streamers over the last two years.”

He continued: “Jack Link’s has become an integral partner to Fnatic, constantly looking to add value to our community from custom CS:GO maps, to pro/community tournaments, engaging content, and physical events at Gamescom and PGL Antwerp. The last two years have been nothing but fun, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring our plans for the next few to life.”

Inka Weber, Marketing Manager EMEA, said: “We’re so pleased to be renewing our partnership with Fnatic. Our protein-rich snacks are the perfect accompaniment to activities such as gaming, providing that quick, natural source of energy you need when taking on long sessions. It’s great to be working with one of the most established orgs in the business, and we continue to be committed to being a true partner, supporting both professional and amateur gamers. The Beefmode Topia and BeefaLaResistance campaigns last year were just a taste of what’s to come – we can’t wait to get started.”

McLaren Shadow’s Lucas Blakeley Wins 2022 F1 Esports Series Pro Championship

Reading Time: 2 minutes

On Friday evening in the final race of the season McLaren Shadow’s Lucas Blakeley won the 2022 F1 Esports Series Pro Championship. McLaren Shadow has also been crowned the Constructors Champions for 2022 for the first time, clinching the title with two races to go after a brilliant season for Blakeley and his ever-present teammate Bari Boroumand.

The Grand Final began with five drivers battling for the championship, with only 22 points seperating Blakeley at the top and last years’ champion, Jarno Opmeer in fifth. Blakeley’s teammate Boroumand, Haas rookie Thomas Ronhaar and Red Bull’s Frede Rasmussen were the other three drivers in contention for the title. The Constructors’ Championship was also still to be decided going into the Grand Final, but McLaren Shadow had a dominant lead on Red Bull and Mercedes.

On Wednesday, the Pro Championship visited Suzuka in what was a entertaining encounter, full of exciting, wheel-to-wheel racing. It was Ronhaar who started the race on pole but Alfa Romeo’s Nicolas Longuet came out victorious, getting his first race win of the season as the Haas driver and Rasmussen made up the rest of the podium. Opmeer was unable to continue his impressive form from the previous event and his title hopes came to an end after not being able to finish the race. McLaren Shadow clinched the Constructors’ Championship at Suzuka with Blakeley and Boroumand finishing 4th and 5th respectively.

Blakeley went on to secure his fourth win of the season in the penultimate race at Interlagos, which began in wet conditions. The Scotsman, who started on pole in a McLaren 1-2, was able to hold his position at the front, avoiding the battling going on behind him between two of his title rivals, with Rasmussen and Boroumand eventually securing P2 and P3, with the latter’s title hopes ending due to results around him. Meanwhile, the other title contender, Ronhaar, had a disappointing race for his standards, finishing sixth after starting the race in fifth – however, this result still kept the Dutchman’s title hopes alive.

This meant in the final race of the season, it was all to play for at the Yas Marina Circuit, with Blakeley (169 points) needing just five points to secure the title, ahead of Rasmussen (148) and Ronhaar (147). It started with a surprise as AlphaTauri’s Josh Idowu got his first pole position of the season, crowning what has been an impressive season for the former McLaren driver. However, the title-chasing trio took up the three spots behind him so it was set-up for a tense race to the finish line, especially with a mix of tyre strategies at play. Ronhaar, who started in P2, took the lead before the pit stops, with Red Bull’s Marcel Kiefer also playing a role in keeping the Haas man behind him in an attempt to boost his teammate’s title chances. Rasmussen soon took the lead and held on to it until the end, with Ronhaar and Idowu making up the top three, but it wasn’t enough as Blakeley took P4 and secured his first ever F1 Esports Series Pro Championship title, culminating in several years of determination and improvement from the Scotsman.

Today the stakes increase, as a single-elimination, best-of-three format awaits the remaining teams. By the end of the day, only four teams will remain, each set to compete on the biggest stage they’ve ever experienced.

Canada, Poland, Egypt, UK, Peru, Indonesia, Portugal and Denmark round out the 16 teams entering the playoffs

Yesterday saw the second group of qualified teams compete for the final eight spots in the Red Bull Campus Clutch World Final playoffs. Groups E and F hosted the most dominant victories, with Canada’s o7 and Egypt’s Team RA’AD each going 5-0 against their competition. o7’s performance was made all the more impressive by the strong teams in their group, including great talent from Turkey and Poland, as well as the LCQ team Bravado Gaming who looked very dominant in their path throughout qualifications. While the Egyptian Bravado Gaming team fell at the group stages, Team RA’AD carry on the possibility of a back-to-back win for Egypt, following last year’s victory.

“We obviously knew that our group is one of the hardest, but the level of competition exceeded all expectations. Guys from Canada did really well and surprised us with their gameplay, but our game against Egypt was definitely the best show out there. We look forward to playoffs where we want to destroy everyone and our biggest dream is to reach the final where we could play against one of the other Eastern Europe team!” Heyo, Poland (black team)

The second set of groups saw strong showings from Indonesian team BaTagoR and Peruvian Nitrous Gaming, each finishing 4-1 in their group. BaTagoR formed just before last year’s Red Bull Campus Clutch tournament, however this has been their first appearance together in the competition. In the final Group H, Portugal’s QuartetoDos5 went flawless in a group featuring talent from Denmark, Chile, Japan and Bosnia.

“After losing to RAAD we realised that we weren’t playing badly and made sure to keep our confidence up for the next matches. Our only other scare was when playing against Indonesia LCQ, as it was the map that we had to win to qualify and they were slowly bringing it back from 11-7 to 11-11. Fortunately, we won and are really happy about qualifying through to tomorrow and getting to play on the main stage” sm1leCasa Noturna (UK)

Red Bull Campus Clutch World Final Day 1 – The first eight teams to play The Red Bull Campus Clutch Top 16 revealed

Yesterday, the first spikes were planted for the Red Bull Campus Clutch World Final, the global student VALORANT tournament, as teams from 50 countries kicked off their campaigns from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Fighting for pride, national glory and a €20,000 prize pool plus more, the first day of the tournament saw fierce competition in the Estádio do Pacaembu–a venue home to some of the most iconic sports moments in Brazilian history.

USA, Czech Republic, North Macedonia, Netherlands, Pakistan, New Zealand, Slovenia and Chile advance to the next round

Over 20 teams competed on the first day of the group stages, including the home team Brazil. The action kicked off early with two teams, USA’s Northwood and Czech Republic’s Narodni Garda, establishing themselves as strong contenders with 5-0 sweeps across their groups. Northwood University is one of the premier collegiate esports programs in the United States, while Narodni Garda, with a deep pool of experienced players, is beginning to look like one of the favourites to win the tournament.

“It feels amazing to represent Team USA, the Red Bull staff and local São Paulo residents have been amazing, the trip has been great already and winning is just the icing on the cake.” – Cody Elsen, Northwood Coach (USA).

“Today we won our group stage with a comfortable 5-0. I think we did really well and adapted well on LAN. The staff around us was really helpful which definitely boosted our focus level. I hope we gonna transform those performances into the playoffs and win the whole thing.”- Michael Glancer (Narodni Garda, Czech Republic).

Later on in the day, Viva Hollandia from the Netherlands, and team OBK from Macedonia, put on a strong showing by each going 5-0 in their respective groups. The Dutch group bested strong teams from Germany, Australia, Italy, Bulgaria and Chile on their way to their flawless first-day record, while OBK kept all their games to normal time as they confidently strode to the playoffs.

“The day started really well against a good Italy, we made a nice comeback and it was only a fraction of what we showed this day. The reason we came out on top in all the close games is that we always had faith. We knew we could do it and we prepared well. Huge vouches to the team and their solid performance.”- Team Netherlands

Teams from Slovenia, New Zealand, Pakistan and Chile also progressed through the group stages and are set to compete in the playoffs on Thursday. Local Brazillian team Scroll Lock came painfully close to qualification, with a nail-biting match against Narodni Gard that extended several rounds into overtime. However, Narodni Gard took the win 18-16, putting Scroll Lock out of contention for the next stage.

These teams will be up against eight others who will be determined on the second round of group stages on Thursday 15 December in the Top 16 round of the Red Bull Campus Clutch World Final.
