Gambling Commission Chief Executive Andrew Rhodes to open ICE Consumer Protection Zone

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The central importance of the ICE Consumer Protection Zone (CPZ) has been put into sharp focus with confirmation that Andrew Rhodes, Chief Executive at the Gambling Commission will officially open the pioneering feature at 11.30am on Tuesday 6th February.

The official opening will follow the donation of £41,000 to a safer gambling charity selected by CPZ supporters and donors. The sum which has been generated courtesy of contributions made by leading brands comprising Light & Wonder, Flutter, Betsson Group, IGT, Novomatic, Neccton and Playtech takes the total raised by CPZ supporters to £238,000 over the last four years.

Reflecting on the development of the Consumer Protection Zone Ewa Bakun, Clarion Gaming’s Director of Industry Insight and Engagement said: “The CPZ was created at the suggestion of the Gambling Commission’s Tim Miller and it is therefore totally appropriate that the 2024 edition, the last to be held in London prior to our relocation to Barcelona next year should be opened by the Commission’s Chief Executive, Andrew Rhodes.

“ICE became the first b2b gambling exhibition to include an area on the show floor dedicated to safer gambling. Since its launch in 2018 the CPZ has grown in both size and status to the extent that post-show research has confirmed it as the most popular ICE feature by show visitors.

“The 2024 edition of the Consumer Protection Zone is the biggest on record comprising 20 booths showcasing technology and solutions providers alongside the industry’s leading safer gambling charities. It remains the perfect place for all sectors to learn and share insights as to how we can deliver safe gambling experiences for players.”

Tracy Skenandore, Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility at Light & Wonder, stated: “At Light & Wonder, we are committed to serving as responsible corporate stewards driven by purpose. With the best interest of our employees, players and communities at the forefront of our work, we are dedicated to investing in charities that support our communities, foster sustainability, support responsible gaming for our players, and which build a diverse and inclusive culture where equity and belonging can thrive. It’s for all of these reasons we have chosen to support the Consumer Protection Zone as a donor, alongside our industry partners, to support worthy charities in both the UK and internationally that will make a lasting impact.”

Dr Michael Auer, Managing Director of OpenBet’s Neccton, added: “We are delighted to support the Consumer Protection Zone at this year’s ICE London. The CPZ has the latest developments in player protection and safer gaming at its core, and its donations make a significant difference to charities supporting positive play and tackling gambling-related harm each year. At Neccton, we continue to develop the most up-to-date player protection tools and contribute to the wider discussion around responsible gaming using research-informed insights, which is why we are thrilled to be part of this year’s line-up of speakers at the CPZ. The last year has been pivotal in the global regulatory landscape and we expect the Zone to be a major focal point for many ICE attendees.”

New Media Rights Deal Underpins Exciting Future for Chelmsford City Racecourse

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Chelmsford City Racecourse has completed new long-term media rights extensions with Sports Information Services (SIS) and Racecourse Media Group (RMG).

The forward-thinking Essex racecourse has welcomed multi-year extensions to the existing arrangements with SIS and RMG. The deal covers all betting and media rights across retail and digital channels and means racing will continue to be shown on the Racing TV channel and in betting shops via the SIS service. Chelmsford City Racecourse will join as a member racecourse of RMG.

In addition, Chelmsford City Racecourse will be rolling out the award-winning Coursetrack system in order to provide live, in-race timing information, which will be broadcast on-screen and published online.

Chelmsford City Racecourse hosts a number of key flat races throughout the year including Listed contests, the Chelmer Fillies’ Stakes and the Queen Charlotte Fillies’ Stakes, and is set to become the first track in Great Britain to stage both turf and all-weather racing under floodlights.

The deal will enable Chelmsford City Racecourse to plan for the future with certainty, advancing plans to include a new £85 million multi-purpose grandstand, which will serve as a thriving entertainment destination for the area including a 2,500-seat theatre and, potentially, a casino.

The course is investing more in its race programme and is hoping to create opportunities for Pattern races as well as staging trials for the sport’s biggest international meetings.

“We are looking forward to working closely with SIS and RMG to strengthen our existing racing programme and to work on new initiatives,” the Racing Director for Chelmsford City Racecourse, Neil Graham, said. “These deals give us the certainty by supporting ambitions for the racecourse to be bolder and more ambitious in its plans going forward.”

“Planning successes on the 400-acre site, which includes the racecourse, has proved pivotal in funding the racecourse ambitions,” the founder of Chelmsford City Racecourse, John Holmes, said. “We will not forget the contribution and support during our partnership with Fred Done, without whom none of this would have been possible.”

“We are pleased to extend our long-standing partnership with Chelmsford City Racecourse to the end of 2029,” the Chief Executive Officer for SIS, Richard Ames, said. “Together, we have built a strong relationship and we are confident that our customers will continue to enjoy the top-quality racing action we can provide them from both the all-weather and turf tracks.”

RMG is delighted to announce that Chelmsford City Racecourse will be joining as a member of the group, which is 100% owned by racecourses and pays 100% of its profits to its racecourse shareholders, meaning there is no leakage outside of the sport.

“RMG and its 34 racecourse shareholders are delighted to welcome Chelmsford City Racecourse to the RMG family,” the Chief Executive Officer for RMG, Martin Stevenson, said. “The racecourse is continually looking to innovate and invest and create new, exciting offerings for participants, race fans and punters, which is very much reflective of the RMG ethos.”

Ascot Racecourse and Tote Sign New Five-Year Agreement

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Ascot Racecourse and UK Tote Group commit to continue to grow pool betting together

Support and development of World Pool at the heart of the agreement

Ascot Racecourse and the Tote have signed a new agreement that will strengthen and grow pool betting in the United Kingdom.

The agreement, which commenced on January 1, 2024, ensures all pool bets placed on racing from Ascot Racecourse will continue to support liquidity in the United Kingdom pool, which has been operated by the UK Tote Group since October of 2019. This includes bets placed on-course under the Bet with Ascot brand, remotely via Tote.co.uk and through bookmakers and third-party partners.

Over the last four years, Ascot Racecourse and the Tote have built a positive partnership. Pool betting on racing from Ascot Racecourse is growing year-on-year and both parties are committed to accelerating this under the new agreement. The growth is due to both the quality and popularity of the racing action on the track and the innovations being brought to pool betting in the United Kingdom, which are appealing to a growing number of racing fans betting on the sport. Since 2020, remote B2C turnover (British and Irish customers betting on Tote.co.uk/ie) on racing from Ascot Racecourse has more than trebled while overseas turnover (international customers) is up 22% over the same period with the help of World Pool.

Internationally, Ascot Racecourse has been central to World Pool since its inauguration at Royal Ascot in June of 2019. The Royal Meeting proved a successful template for the World Pool model, whereby Tote operators from 28 countries commingle pools, hosted by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, to significantly increase liquidity and enhance the betting experience. With World Pool days on British and Irish race-days having grown to 17 days in 2023, the sport is benefiting from increased financial income through higher media rights payments, while racing fans enjoy deeper, more stable pools and enhanced competitive returns. For example, a £1 bet with the Tote on every winner on British and Irish World Pool days in 2023 paid £263 more than the industry starting price with the Tote win overround at 109% versus an industry starting price overround of 122%.

Ascot Racecourse, along with other British Racecourses and the Tote, will be working closely with the Hong Kong Jockey Club to help ensure the continued growth of World Pool in 2024. This will be achieved via racecourses making the race fields on World Pool days as competitive as possible and thus attractive to bet on while the Tote is continuing to improve the value and experience of pool betting for racing fans.

“We are delighted have a new agreement in place with the Tote that will allow us to build on what has been achieved domestically and internationally over the last four years,” the Chief Executive for Ascot Racecourse, Alastair Warwick, said. “As one of the original architects of World Pool, alongside the Hong Kong Jockey Club and the Tote, we are excited to support the further development of World Pool to ensure both racing fans and the sport benefit from it. We were thrilled to see that Royal Ascot produced five of the top six World Pool days by total turnover in 2023 and also that QIPCO King George Day performed so well after some targeted race planning changes. We will ensure that Ascot Racecourse’s top-class racing continues to be at the forefront of British racing’s efforts to see that the sport is watched and bet on by a growing domestic and global audience.”

“The Tote is immensely proud to be a partner of Ascot Racecourse, which hosts some of the most prestigious race-days in the sporting calendar,” the Chief Executive for UK Tote Group, Alex Frost, said. “This new agreement ensures Ascot Racecourse and the Tote are perfectly positioned to work together to achieve a strong United Kingdom pool, alongside the continued development of World Pool, which are crucial elements to the future financial sustainability of the sport. I would personally like to thank Alastair and his excellent team at Ascot Racecourse for their ongoing support and everyone at the Tote looks forward to continuing our partnership with Ascot Racecourse over the next five years.”

With the spotlight firmly on its trademark feature-rich games at stand S4-430, BetGames will be presenting its vast portfolio of content, aimed at converting recreational bettors into casino and games players with a variety of different game categories and unique features.

BetGames’ goal is to nurture players organically through a set of specific nurturing pathways – its hugely successful Skyward Crash game, which launched earlier this year, being a key proponent of this strategy.

Leveraging its global reach via licences in several new regions including MGA, South Africa, Canada and UKGC, BetGames aims to bridge the gap between sports and casino players with its products.

Twain Sport brand products T-Basket and T-Kick serve as the ideal gateway to revolutionising the sports betting space, while bespoke versions of games for emerging markets, including a future emphasis on LatAm, ensure a wider variety of players can access the full portfolio.

This blueprint substantially drives player value while reducing casino acquisition costs. And with its whole content library embracing this core feature, BetGames continues to partner with tier-one operators, such as Betway, Entain, Kaizen Gaming, Betano and Hollywoodbets.

Andreas Koeberl, CEO at BetGames, said: “We head to London for the last edition of ICE in the UK before it moves over to Barcelona in 2025 and BetGames has plenty in store for those looking to elevate their player offering with unique, curated content.

“The last 12 months have put us on a positive trajectory. We’re live in new markets, having obtained additional licences, and with new laws changing we’re looking at stepping further into Brazil to bring our brand of entertainment to a massively exciting market. You can expect plenty of key announcements throughout the upcoming months as we continue to expand our portfolio and global presence.
