Gambling Venues in Denmark to Remain Closed Until April 5

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Danish Government has announced that casinos and gaming halls across the country will remain closed until April 5 at the earliest, in line with extended novel coronavirus (Covid-19) restrictions.

Venues temporarily shut in December last year after the government extended national Covid-19 measures until February 28, with the aim of opening early in 2021.

However, as Covid-19 case rates remained higher, venues have been kept closed in an effort to prevent further spread while Denmark commenced its vaccination programme.

In its latest update, the Danish Health and Medicines Authority announced that despite some relaxation of measures, casinos, gaming halls and restaurants will remain shut until at least 5 April.

A selection of other venues such as some non-essential shops and outdoor visitor attractions will be able to reopen in some regions, while certain year groups will also be allowed back into schools in select areas. All other measures, including travel restrictions, will remain in place until early April.

LeoVegas is launching a new campaign concept and introducing “Leo” as the company’s Chief Entertainment Officer.

For the first time, LeoVegas is launching a global marketing campaign with a new commercial concept. With this new concept, the company will create unified communication, consistent across all markets. The new concept will take place at LeoVegas’ fictitious headquarters in the LeoUniverse. This will be rolled out with localised adaptations during the first quarter of 2021.

This spring, the gaming company LeoVegas is launching a global marketing campaign. In connection with this, the company will introduce a completely new commercial concept; LeoUniverse, where the company’s fictitious Chief Entertainment Officer, Leo, works at the company’s headquarters. With the help of humour and recognition of everyday life, LeoVegas creates a commercial series that combines laughter and entertainment in high-quality production.

”Offering the best customer experience starts with our marketing. With this new concept, we invite our customers to a completely new ’LeoUniverse’, a world filled with entertainment, excitement, and humour. We will get to know several new characters but also meet familiar faces from our most popular games”, explained Sarah Krusell, Marketing Production Director at LeoVegas.

Working to develop the new global creative concept for LeoVegas it became clear that the heart of their offering is highly aligned with the entertainment industry. And obviously, their brand universe should be an extension of that feeling”, states Lars Samuelsen, Creative Chairman at the advertising agency Uncle Grey.

With this new concept, the company’s marketing communications will be unified across all markets whilst also being adapted to fit the local needs and regulations of each market.

”Our industry has historically not maintained a high enough level when it comes to advertising and marketing. Instead of being the loudest, we hope to now be able to introduce a concept that people actually appreciate and find entertaining. With more relevant content, we can responsibly build an entertaining brand”, added Sarah Krusell.

The concept will be used across all markets, channels and all media formats and will continue to position LeoVegas as a responsible brand that offers entertainment and excitement in a safe environment.

The LeoUniverse concept has been developed and produced together with the award-winning Copenhagen based advertising agency; Uncle Grey. The campaign will initially be broadcast on TV in Denmark and Sweden and will be followed up by digital campaigns across a variety of channels.

Finnish Consumer Authority Says Veikkaus’ Revenue Should Go to Treasury

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority (KKV) has published its final report into the country’s state gambling monopoly, Veikkaus.

The authority has concluded that Veikkaus’ revenue should go to the Finnish treasury rather than specific ministries and that Veikkaus should be placed under the power of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

More than half of Veikkaus’ revenue currently goes to the Ministry of Education and Culture to fund sports, science and arts, while 43% goes to the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. The remaining 4% goes to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry as funding for horse racing.

The KKV said this meant that initiatives to reduce gambling harm could lead to underfunding in the other areas. It suggested that all revenue should go to the treasury instead to ensure predictability and stability in funding.

Research professor Mika Maliranta said: “If active efforts are made to reduce gambling disadvantages, Veikkaus beneficiaries will not be able to anticipate their funding, as reducing gambling disadvantages is likely to have an impact on the amount of Veikkaus revenues distributed to beneficiaries.

“On the other hand, if the gambling monopoly does not actively seek to reduce harm, the monopoly system does not meet the purpose or justification of the law. This contradiction has hampered the social debate about Veikkaus’ responsibility.”

The report also recommends that Veikkaus’ governance should come under the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health (STM) instead of the Prime Minister’s Office.

It said: “STM is already responsible for monitoring, researching, evaluating and developing prevention and treatment of gambling disorders. Thus, it would be best placed to steer the company in a direction where gambling causes less harm to individuals and society.”

North Esports Dissolving Due to COVID-19 Financial Impact

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The owners of North Esports have announced that the Danish organisation will be dissolved due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

North Esports is a joint venture between entertainment company Nordisk Film and Danish football club FC Copenhagen owner Parken Sport & Entertainment. However, the parent companies said the negative financial impacts of the global pandemic led to a decision to discontinue investing in the esports space together.

North fielded teams and players in several games. Their Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) team won multiple DreamHack events and the organisation also competed Apex Legends and FIFA. According to the announcement, the FIFA players will stay under the direction of FC Copenhagen to remain a part of the eSuperliga while the other teams will be gradually dissolved.

“We have searched the market to get one or more co-investors on board, but unfortunately have not found the right match. It will take significant continued investment to create a sustainable business in the future and therefore we believe that the only responsibility for our overall business is to focus all on our core business in F.C. Copenhagen, Parken and Lalandia, just as Nordisk Film will focus on its large core and growth businesses,” Lars Bo Jeppesen, CEO of Parken Sport & Entertainment, said in a statement (translated from Danish).

“It’s still uncertain when a reopening after Covid-19 is realistic so we can get customers back. There is still potential in e-sports and gaming, but the time horizon is long and uncertain, and Covid-19 has moved the time horizon further into the future according to our assessment, as both esports and the sports industry as a whole are hit hard financially.”
