Football legend Michael Owens joins SunBet as a Brand Ambassador

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In a stunning coup, former Liverpool, Manchester United, and England star Michael Owen is to spearhead Sun International’s online betting platform SunBet’s attack as brand ambassador.

Leading online betting platform SunBet, part of the Sun International group, has signed footballing superstar and world-renowned pundit Michael Owen as its brand ambassador.

Owen has signed an exclusive deal from June 2023 as part of the betting platform’s 13th birthday celebrations, heralding a new era for the business.

SunBet CEO Simon Gregory said: “We are absolutely delighted to have Michael on board as a brand ambassador to provide and share his deep insights of the game of football with SunBet customers.

“Anyone who loves the English Premier League and football in general will appreciate his deep knowledge of the game, coupled with his articulate and insightful commentary and analysis which have made him one of the most sought-after football media personalities in the world.

“As a former player at the highest level, he knows exactly what goes through the minds of players and managers at key points in a match and during the course of an arduous season and brings this to bear in his commentary and analysis.”

The 2001 Ballon d’Or winner will provide score predictions, expert tips and insights, weekly football betting odds, and signed memorabilia, among other duties. Owen, who is also an accomplished racehorse owner and trainer, will also be relied on to give periodic and fascinating insights into the horseracing industry.

“I have come to know South Africa very well over the years in my various roles as a football analyst and I know the deep and incredible passion there is for football in this country. From the PSL, to the Premier League and I cannot wait to share my knowledge and passion with SunBet fans. I am thrilled to be joining one of South Africa’s leading brands and one which shares my passion and enthusiasm for football, horse racing and other pursuits,” said Owen.
Owen burst onto the football scene with English giants Liverpool in 1997 as a 17-year-old, becoming the club’s youngest player as well as goal scorer. In a footballing career that took him from the Reds to bitter rivals Manchester United and Newcastle United, via Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid, Owen scored over 220 goals in nearly 500 appearances at the club level. His exploits at international level were equally impressive, as he netted 40 goals in 89 appearances for England.

From strength to strength

In 13 short years, SunBet has grown from a platform that began with the main sporting codes of football, rugby, cricket, golf, horseracing major events such as world cups and more.

The SunBet platform has further evolved into offering fixed odd bets on the outcome of slots and tables games such as roulette, blackjack and baccarat.

In 2022, SunBet paid out well over R1-billion as online entertainment continues to show impressive growth. “We are predicting another great year for SunBet as our customer numbers are up and we are predicting record revenues for the 2023 financial year.

“However, without a doubt, football remains our biggest ticket item and SunBet is able to provide soccer betting offerings with literally thousands of markets and competitive odds,” explained Gregory.

The installation of a pundit of the stature of Michael Owen is a sign of things to come as SunBet lines up another record-breaking year.

Tech and platform supplier continues to establish itself as the go-to provider in Africa with the opening of a brand new facility in Dakar

Honoré Gaming, the leading technology and platform provider to operators serving the fast-growing African market, has opened the doors to a brand new, state-of-the-art office facility in the capital of Senegal, Dakar.

The occasion was marked with a ceremony attended by Honoré Gaming employees as well as members of the senior management team from National Lottery operator, Lonase, with Lonase CEO Mr Lat Diop giving a speech. This was followed by a performance from famous Senegalese singer, Youssou N’Dour.

Honoré Gaming has established itself as the go-to technology partner for land-based and online sportsbook and casino operators in the African region, with a particular focus on French-speaking markets where its operators dominate in the likes of Congo Brazzaville, Chad and of course, Senegal.

The opening of its Dakar office comes at a time when Honoré Gaming continues to focus on French-speaking African markets while expanding into English-speaking African markets and assessing opportunities to deploy its retail and online technology in emerging jurisdictions such as LatAm.

Africa has been on operator radars for a number of years now, but in recent months several tier-one brands have made their move in the region. This has seen a spike in interest from tier-two operators and local betting brands looking to leverage the opportunity on the table.

Honoré Gaming is here to support these brands, and the power players, as they launch their sportsbooks and casinos in each jurisdiction. Its retail and online technologies and platforms allow operators to truly localise and personalise their proposition for each market.

This is crucial to success with player preferences different across the continent and operators having to meet different regulatory requirements in each country they target. Honoré’s solutions have been designed to allow them to do this with ease.

Christophe Casanova, COO at Honoré Gaming, said: “We are delighted to open an office in Senegal we continue to establish ourselves as the leading technology and platform provider in Africa. Senegal is a key market for us and our partners, so it’s great to have a presence in the country from where we can better support land-based and online operators.

“Africa has been a market of interest for a number of years now, but there is real momentum across the region with more and more brands wanting to get in on the action. Our platform and suite of solutions have been designed specifically for Africa, allowing operators to deploy sportsbook and casino experiences that not only meet but exceed player expectations.

“That we can no offer this from an office based in the heart of Senegal is a major milestone for Honoré Gaming and sets us up for continued success.”

Does prize money for Esports fall under the Gambling Act?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA)  is the world’s oldest national federation for esports having been founded in 1985 and is the custodian for all esports in South Africa.

With the development of esports in South Africa, there are more-and-more private operators wanting to start their own competitions. Many of these private operators do not want to seek official accreditation in order to avoid regulatory bodies and the law.

eSports are not governed by gambling legislation and therefore a licence from the provincial gambling boards is not required should events be accredited by MSSA.

If the event meets the requirements for an eSport event, then the event would be governed by the eSport regulator.

Online gaming has gained significant momentum in South Africa. There are dedicated leagues that host local competitions where entrants pay fees (similar to the Registration Fees) and compete for the opportunity to win cash prizes.

Online gaming on a competitive level is considered an eSport. The recognition of eSports in South Africa has taken great strides by MSSA. In this way, competitive and online gaming is regulated in terms of sporting regulation and not under gambling laws.

In the 2013 White Paper on Sport and Recreation for the Republic of South Africa (White Paper), the definition of sport in a development context includes a broad and inclusive spectrum of activities which people of all ages and abilities can participate.

In 2008, the United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on Sport for the Development and Peace defined sport, for the purposes of development, as “all forms of physical activity that contribute to physical fitness, mental wellbeing and social interaction, such as play, recreation, organised or competitive sport, and indigenous sports and games”.

Fortunately, Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) (the official organisation with the rights to give out South African colours to eSports teams at a national and provincial level) makes a clear provision for the recognition of eSports in their constitutional document. eSports are recognised as sports and are, as such, regulated in terms of sporting legislation and not gambling legislation.

Thus, it is MSSA’s opinion that in order to avoid approaching a gambling regulator, a private operator needs to have its event registered as an accredited eSport event.

mssa’s-view-of-encouraging-females-to-play-esports

MSSA’s view of encouraging females to play esports

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Esports, or electronic sports, has become a global phenomenon, with millions of people tuning in to watch competitive video game matches online or in person. As the popularity of esports continues to grow, it is becoming increasingly important to encourage diversity and inclusivity in the industry, particularly in terms of gender.

Since 2009 Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) has had an active policy to increase female representation in esports. This is important for a number of reasons. First, it is simply a matter of fairness and equality. Women should have the same opportunities to compete and succeed in esports as men. By promoting gender diversity in the industry, we can help to break down barriers and create a more inclusive environment for everyone.

However, as MSSA President, Colin Webster, stated, “There are also practical reasons why having more females play esports is important. For one, it can help to grow the industry. Women make up a significant portion of the gaming market, and by tapping into this market, esports organizations and companies can reach a wider audience and increase their revenue streams.”

Webster added, “Additionally, having more females involved in esports can help to address some of the toxic behaviors and attitudes that have plagued the industry in the past. Women have historically faced harassment and discrimination in the gaming world, but by promoting gender diversity and inclusion, we can help to create a more welcoming and supportive community.”

There are also potential benefits to individual female players. By participating in esports, women can gain valuable skills and experience in areas such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving as well as earn Regional, provincial, and National Colours that may help such females obtain bursaries in order to study further. These skills can then be applied to other areas of their lives, such as their careers or personal relationships.

However, increasing female representation in esports is not without its challenges as MSSA is painfully aware. Women are still underrepresented in the industry, and those who do participate often face a range of barriers and obstacles. Some of these include online harassment and discrimination, a lack of female role models and mentors, and limited opportunities for sponsorship and funding.

MSSA faced very stiff opposition from many gamers, some of them who even have daughters, over the years when promoting its policies of enablement and inclusion.

To address these challenges, MSSA has always taken proactive steps to promote gender diversity and inclusion. This has included initiatives of providing incentives and creating real and credible upward movement. MSSA is the only esports national federation, world-wide with 40% of its Board consisting of female Board Members.

In conclusion, increasing female representation in esports is not only a matter of fairness and equality, but also a practical way to grow the industry and create a more inclusive and supportive community. By taking proactive steps to promote gender diversity and inclusion, we can help to build a better future for esports and for everyone involved in it.

Mind Sports South Africa’s (MSSA) 2023 Gauteng Online Championships held on 11 March 2023 showed sterling results.

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The championship was a last chance for many esports athletes to qualify for MSSA’s National Team Trials to be held on 25 March 2023 at which the team will be selected to officially represent South Africa at the African Qualifiers which lead up to IESF’s 15th World Esports Championships to be held in Lasi, Romania in August 2023.

All Registered Players who have finished in the top three places, or the top 20% – whichever is greater, are entitled to enter trials.

However, it must be remembered that all players must have a valid passport at the date of entry.

It was indeed exciting to watch just how much all the female teams have improved.

White Rabbit Gaming Club’s (WRG) female team astounded all with their skill and sportsmanship. The team demolished all the female opposition and narrowly lost to the male team which ultimately won the premier event.

It is expected that the selection process for the esports title will be hotly contested.

Other female teams that excelled are:

  • Roedean College – League of Legends, and
  • Northcliff High School – Mobile Legends: Bang, Bang

The high standard of play saw a number of Registered Players being awarded Provincial Colours. Only Limpopo and Northern Cape did not have rRegistered Players who did not earn provincial colours.
