Understanding the World of Sports Betting Licences

Reading Time: 4 minutes

In the exhilarating world of sports betting, where fortunes can change with the swing of a ball, trust and legitimacy are paramount. This is where the concept of a betting licence comes into play. A betting licence serves as the proverbial badge of honour for sports betting companies, assuring both customers and regulatory authorities of their authenticity and commitment to fair play.

Issued by a gambling committee, a betting licence is a tangible proof of a sportsbook’s legitimacy and adherence to stringent regulations. It is more than just a piece of paper; it’s a commitment to ethics, integrity and customer protection. In this article, KT Group (https:// kioskterminals .com) delves into the intricacies of betting licences, exploring their significance, history and how they vary on opposite sides of the Atlantic.

Getting to grips with United States sports betting licences

Most states that have opened their doors to sports betting have adopted a hierarchical licensing structure. This framework imposes licensing requirements on sportsbook operators as well as on the companies that offer goods and services to these operators. This dual-tiered approach often includes an ‘operator licence’ for sportsbook operators along with either a ‘supplier licence’ or a ‘vendor registration’ for the companies in the sports betting ecosystem.

The reach of these vendor and supplier licensing requirements is extensive, casting a wide net that in some states encompasses virtually any business entity that engages with a licensed sportsbook operator. The extent of this reach is exemplified by the fact that in certain states even law firms and advertising/media agencies providing services to sportsbook operators must obtain licences.

Adding another layer of complexity, some states have divided the vendor and supplier licences into distinct categories: a higher-level ‘supplier’ (or ‘vendor major’) licence for providers whose services directly impact sportsbook operations and a lower-level ‘vendor registration’ licence for those whose services have a less direct impact. Providers navigating these regulations often find themselves grappling with the task of categorising their services and determining the appropriate licence, which can be particularly challenging in the absence of clear-cut guidelines.

To further complicate matters, licensing rules in many states incorporate ‘catch-all’ provisions, granting regulators the discretion to determine on a case-by-case basis how a specific provider should be licensed. This discretion adds an element of unpredictability, making it essential for businesses to engage with regulatory authorities and legal counsel to navigate the complex terrain of sports betting licences in the United States.

The state of play

An increasing number of states recognise the potential revenue and entertainment value it offers. Some of the early adopters include Delaware and New Jersey, both of which legalised sports betting in 2018. These states paved the way for others to follow suit, showcasing the feasibility and benefits of a regulated sports betting industry.

Building on the foundation laid by the early adopters, several states further expanded their sports betting offerings in 2020 and 2021. Colorado and Montana joined the ranks of legalised sports betting in 2020 followed by Arizona, Connecticut, Louisiana, Nebraska, North Dakota and Virginia in 2021. These states embraced both retail and mobile betting, demonstrating a growing acceptance of sports wagering as a legitimate form of entertainment and a potential source of revenue.

The momentum has continued in 2022 and 2023 as Kansas welcomed online sports betting. Vermont, while having legalised sports betting, is expected to launch online platforms in late-2023 or early-2024. States such as Massachusetts and Ohio also entered the fray, showcasing the industry’s dynamic growth.

While some states have firmly established their presence in the sports betting and lottery arena, others are still in the midst of legislative deliberations or have proposed bills in the works. States like Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Carolina and Texas are actively considering the legalisation of sports betting. These states are evaluating the potential benefits and regulatory frameworks that would best suit their unique circumstances.

On the opposite side, there are states where sports betting remains off the table. States like Alabama, Alaska, California, Hawaii, Idaho and Utah have either opted against legalisation or are yet to fully embrace the industry. While some may cite moral or regulatory concerns, others may be waiting to observe the experiences of their neighbours before making a decision.

With each passing year, the map of sports betting legalisation in the United States continues to evolve, offering a fascinating glimpse into the intersection of entertainment, revenue generation and regulatory complexity.

Europe and beyond

Europe stands as a prominent sports betting player with a tapestry of regulations and licensing authorities. At the forefront of European sports betting regulation is the United Kingdom, a jurisdiction renowned for its robust regulatory framework.

The United Kingdom’s gambling laws, including the Gambling Act 2005 and the Gambling Bill 2014, meticulously govern the industry. These laws, which have seen amendments over the years to keep pace with the evolving betting landscape, serve as the backbone of the United Kingdom’s gambling regulation.

Enforcing these laws with a vigilant eye is the United Kingdom’s Gambling Commission. This regulatory authority is celebrated for its unwavering commitment to strict oversight, making it a trusted name in the world of betting licences. The Gambling Commission ensures that operators adhere to stringent guidelines, promoting a fair and safe betting environment for all participants.

Moreover, the Gambling Commission provides a platform for customer recourse. Individuals with complaints about betting operators can register their grievances with the Gambling Commission that, in turn, can facilitate dispute resolution through alternative dispute resolution providers.

Beyond the shores of the United Kingdom, there is an array of betting jurisdictions, each with its own set of regulations and licensing bodies. Some of the prominent licensing authorities include the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), the Kahnawake Gaming Commission and Curacao.

It’s important to note, however, that these regulatory bodies do not mediate disputes between players and operators, protect deposited funds or provide legal advice. Their primary focus is on establishing a framework that encourages responsible gambling and ensures that operators comply with the rules.

These regulatory bodies play a pivotal role in issuing licences, regulating sports betting companies and overseeing their operations. They share a common goal: ensuring the fairness of games, safeguarding vulnerable individuals and maintaining the industry’s integrity.

The Chief Executive Officer for KT Group, Kenneth Larsen, commented on the importance of understanding sports betting licences: “Understanding sports betting is crucial in today’s dynamic landscape, where it signifies an appreciation for the intricate web of regulations, economic impact and evolving fan engagement.

“As more regions embrace and regulate sports betting, it becomes essential for individuals, businesses and policymakers to grasp its intricacies. Sports betting transcends mere entertainment, influencing various industries and shaping how we engage with sports. Therefore, comprehending sports betting is not just an option; it’s a necessity for navigating this evolving landscape effectively.”

Quantum Leap Solutions (QLS) and Pythia Sports have combined to provide the innovative service for content from 37 British racecourses – via Racecourse Media Group (RMG) – on Playtech terminals.

Phase 1 of the enhanced SSBT racing product delivers a range of new betting opportunities in shops, via:

  • Enhanced, data-rich racecards for the traditional racing customers
  • New derivative markets for the traditional SSBT user and new racing customers
  • These new markets include head-to-head, betting without the favourite, odd vs even, place only betting, fancied horses vs the field, and much more
  • Intuitive and easy design, making betting simple for all customers
  • Deeper data and insight providing hints and tips for the novice and expert

Phase 2 of the product is set to include in-play betting, which currently isn’t available over the counter in shops.

RMG have collaborated with Pythia Sports, who have created seamless pricing for bookmakers, and Quantum Leap Solutions (QLS), who have provided the slick design and easy-to-use navigation to provide an innovative racing product for Playtech SSBTs.

Racing from the 37 British racecourses will be displayed on the new SSBTs and available in the shops of Entain (Coral and Ladbrokes), Betfred, Boyle Sports, Paddy Power and Jennings, as well as all UK and Irish independent shops.

Nick Mills, Chief Commercial Officer of RMG, said: “Around 80% of football bets are now staked via SSBTs in betting shops, but the number drops off spectacularly when it comes to racing. This exciting new product provides markets and an experience that is much better suited to the preferences of SSBT users and will accordingly directly drive revenues and engagement with the sport.”

Yori Arami, VP, Sports Commercial at Playtech, said: “Having rolled this fantastic product out to our entire UK and Irish customer base, we are delighted with the positive feedback from customers as well as the popularity of this innovative, new betting offering. We have made the form study quicker and more fun by providing an interactive tool that visualises the effect of factors that determines the outcome of the day’s races. We also wanted to cut to the chase in determining ‘where is the value?’, ‘who’s the form horse?’; ‘what do the tipsters fancy?’ and ‘what does the market say?’”

Freddy Galliers, Director at Pythia Sports, said: “This has been an exciting project for Pythia Sports to work on with RMG in delivering odds to Playtech and its SSBT clients in the UK. RMG’s decision to introduce innovative betting content from all of its tracks is being well-received by SSBT users and has the potential to reshape the way horse racing is bet on in shops.”

SBC Summit Powers Onto Lisbon After Record 2023 Performance

Reading Time: 4 minutes

SBC Events has hailed the support of the global iGaming industry as the reason for a record-breaking 2023 edition of the SBC Summit Barcelona.

This year’s exhibition and conference drew an impressive crowd of around 15,000 attendees, a threefold increase from last year’s figures, solidifying its status as the industry’s fastest-growing event.

The post-event survey data revealed a Net Promoter Score of 49 for the event, highlighting SBC’s dedication to upholding high-quality standards, even in the face of substantial growth in attendance compared to the previous year.

The event kicked off with grandeur at the SBC Leaders Summit—an inaugural edition of the exclusive pre-event invite-only gathering that attracted 500 top-tier industry executives.

This full-day affair featured a wealth of conference content, including a keynote from Frank Abagnale, the man who inspired Steven Spielberg’s ‘Catch Me if You Can,’ networking opportunities, and a poker tournament.

A significant highlight of the event was the induction of Gustaf Hagman (CEO and Co-Founder, LeoVegas), Jordan Levin (CEO, OpenBet), Per Widerström (Incoming CEO, 888 Holdings – effective October 16, 2023), and Brigid Simmonds OBE (Chair, Betting and Gaming Council) into SBC’s Hall of Fame.

Taking place at Fira Barcelona Montjuic on 19-21 September, SBC Summit Barcelona boasted a massive 38,000 square metres show floor accommodating 350 exhibitors, marking a 175% increase as compared to the previous year.

Roger Redfearn-Tyrzyk, VP of Global Gaming at IDnow, provider of identity verification solutions and one of the exhibitors, said: “We are being treated as a partner, not just as a company that pays money to get services. We’re being taken to events and get introduced to people. SBC is a solution-finding partner for us.”

The 2023 show floor was effectively split into five zones denoting key areas of the industry: Sports Betting; Casino & iGaming; Affiliate, Media and Marketing; Payments & Compliance; and Emerging Tech. In addition, there was a designated ‘Festival area,’ which not only showcased exhibitors but also provided the perfect casual networking setting, featuring a sangria & tapas bar, an ice cream bar, a smoothie and juice bar and various other amenities.

The exhibition area was enriched by multiple networking zones, with the SBC Connect+ Lounge serving as a central meeting hub for delegates who had organised their meetings through the official event app. Noteworthy is the fact that the app included a lead assessment feature that saw active use, totalling 2,560 interactions.

When asked what sets SBC Summit Barcelona apart as an industry event, Sab Jhooti, Founder & CEO of investment firm Bonmoja, said: “It’s the community element. Whenever I come, I have the opportunity to meet the who’s who in this industry. Everybody you want to meet comes to this event, so I don’t really have to go anywhere else.”

Spanning seven stages, the comprehensive conference agenda delivered over 80 hours of content and offered insights from over 450 industry leaders. 89.4% of the speakers held C-level positions, while 63.7% represented operators, and 8.9% came from affiliates. The remaining 27.4% of speakers represented suppliers, associations, regulators, media, sports teams, and investors. With a total of 302 questions directed at the speakers on stage, the event adopted a more interactive approach.

Based on insights from SBC Connect+, it’s evident that the following five panels were the most sought-after by app users.

  • “Sports Betting’s Makeover: The Influence of Gamification, Streaming, and Stats”
  • “Affiliate Leaders Panel: Leading Partnerships in Emerging Markets”
  • “Sports & Sponsorship Landscape: Growth Markets and Partnerships”
  • “SBC Leaders: Exploring Global Growth Markets”
  • “Everything, Everywhere, All-of-the-Time: Managing Marketing, Tech & Compliance”

Highlighting the 2023 program were keynotes by Matthew Ball, a renowned metaverse expert and bestselling author, and Daniel Taylor, CEO of Flutter International. In the spirit of increased engagement, each day’s agenda in 2023 concluded with enlightening roundtable sessions — 30 in total — each dedicated to specific markets, verticals, or topics.

A distinctive highlight of SBC’s events, the First Pitch competition, designed to assist startups in bringing their innovative visions to life, announced its latest champion. SnapOdds, the victor of this competition, secured a coveted prize package worth over €60,000, which includes a two-day workshop experience in Tallinn, provided by competition sponsor Yolo Investments, among the list of prizes.

Marking its 10th-anniversary edition, the SBC Awards Ceremony unfolded in style at the iconic Caves Codorníu and recognised industry leaders across 39 featured categories. Hosting the event were the familiar face of SBC Awards, TV personality Kirsty Gallacher, and former professional football player turned manager, Clarence Seedorf, widely acknowledged as one of the greatest midfielders of this generation. The ceremony also featured a special guest appearance by Luis Figo, former World and European Footballer of the Year, who played for both FC Barcelona and Real Madrid and is the current brand ambassador of Digitain.

Thomas Carvalhaes, Managing Director of Brazilian operator VaiDeBob, said: “The quality and calibre of people attending is very impressive. I was on a podcast recently and they asked what my favourite event was. I said it’s SBC Summit Barcelona – for its relevance, for the people who are here and for giving us a sense of what’s about to come.”

Rasmus Sojmark, CEO and Founder of SBC said: “The Barcelona chapter for SBC came to a spectacular close. This event exceeded our wildest dreams as we worked tirelessly to make it the industry’s fastest-growing gathering. With 15,000 attendees filling the exhibition floor, this show will forever be a cherished part of SBC’s history. However, as you all probably know, we’re far from done. The success of this edition paves the way for an even more prosperous next edition. We can’t wait to welcome you all in Lisbon for SBC Summit 2024!”

In a significant development, SBC has announced the next edition of its renowned global flagship event, now rebranded as SBC Summit to underscore its worldwide prominence. The event is set to make its home at Lisbon’s Feira Internacional de Lisboa (FIL) on 24-26 September and is anticipated to occupy a vast area exceeding 100,000 square metres. Expecting a gathering of 25,000 attendees, the event will welcome a substantial 600 exhibitors and feature insights from 500 expert speakers.

“49’s is already a big hit with bettors across South Africa, with the chance to win big from small stakes proving to be a highly attractive proposition,” the Head of Sales Africa for SIS, Joe Andrews, said. “We have placed a strong focus on enhancing our brand visibility and extending our product portfolio and reach across Africa that is rich with promise. This partnership with Aardvark Technologies will go a long way to doing just that.”

“We are always striving to improve our platform and to provide our customers with the widest variety of premium content across multiple verticals,” Simas Denisovas from Aardvark Technologies said. “Partnering with SIS and integrating its leading 49’s live numbers portfolio will ensure we continue to enjoy a commanding position across Africa, providing our operator clients with a regular stream of engaging, premium betting experiences.”
