Football Index has donated its shirt sponsorship for Nottingham Forest and Queens Park Rangers football clubs.

As part of the Safer Gambling Week campaign, the two Championship clubs will carry the logo of the YGAM on the front of their shirts to promote the charity, which provides educational training and resources to help prevent gambling-related harm among young and vulnerable people.

Football Index, the principal shirt sponsor for both clubs this season, is hoping this will help trigger a conversation about safer gambling and help the YGAM reach more football fans. Committed to providing a safe environment and to raising awareness about gambling-related harm, Football Index will also be supporting the YGAM’s work with a £5,000 donation.

Mike Bohan, Co-Founder of Football Index said: “We are delighted to support YGAM and promote Safer Gambling Week this year. At Football Index, we have always made safer gambling one of our utmost priorities, and we are incredibly pleased to be able to support YGAM’s important work to educate future generations and prevent harm. We hope that this initiative will increase awareness and prove an important step towards ensuring young people have the information and knowledge to make informed decisions about gambling.”

David Cook, Chief Commercial Officer at Nottingham Forest said: “This builds on last year’s activities, we are once again very supportive of Football Index’s desire to highlight and promote the safer gaming message, in particular through this promotion of the YGAM charity. It’s great to work with a brand that takes responsibility in how they work, and who always look to stress the importance of responsible gaming for the wider fan base.”

Euan Inglis, Commercial Director at Queens Park Rangers said: “In all of our activation discussions with Football Index, responsible gambling messaging is always at the forefront of content that is produced. The donation by Football Index of our front of shirt property to YGAM to help promote Safer Gambling Week is an initiative that we as a football club fully get behind and are delighted to support.”

Daniel Bliss, Director of External Affairs at YGAM said: “We’re enormously grateful to both clubs and Football Index for their fantastic support. It is vital that we educate our future generations about the potential risks associated with gambling so we can collectively help prevent harm. This weekend will provide an important opportunity to raise the profile of the charity and help us support parents, teachers and young people across all communities.”

UK Game Developer Kwalee Surpasses 100 Employees In Year of Explosive Growth

Reading Time: 2 minutes

  • Leamington Spa-based mobile game developer and publisher hits milestone with overseas studios in Bangalore and Beijing underway

  • Kwalee has grown rapidly in 2020 despite the COVID-19 pandemic, recruiting globally while embracing remote work for the first time

  • After tripling in size over the past two years, Kwalee sets sights on more hit games and more growth, with 60+ current vacancies

Kwalee, a leading developer and publisher of hyper-casual mobile games, has expanded its team to more than 100 people after maintaining a rapid rate of growth throughout 2020.

Despite the company’s Leamington Spa headquarters lying empty for much of the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kwalee team adapted quickly to temporary remote working measures and released multiple hit games in 2020, including Bake It, Line Up: Draw the Criminal and Let’s Be Cops 3D.

This facilitated growth across all disciplines and departments, from Publishing Managers to Game Designers, with Kwalee welcoming team members from as far afield as Turkey, the Philippines, India, Spain and China. And while Kwalee has always recruited internationally, 2020 was the year in which the company cemented its global outlook by permanently opening several positions to remote workers and committing to open new studios in Bangalore and Beijing. Across all locations, Kwalee has more than 50 open positions.

Founded and led by games industry legend David Darling CBE, a co-founder and former CEO of Codemasters, Kwalee has become one of the UK’s biggest gaming success stories while specialising in hyper-casual games – a style of mobile games that are defined by their accessibility and designed to be played in short bursts. Kwalee has become a leading developer and publisher in this space and has racked up nearly half a billion downloads worldwide.

Kwalee has also earned itself a reputation for being a rewarding workplace, not least for the weekly ‘Creative Wednesdays’ where anyone in the company can pitch their game ideas and vote on which ones get made. This also ties into a generous profit share bonus scheme, which surpassed £1 million in payouts in February 2020.

“We’re extremely proud to have expanded the Kwalee team to more than 100 people – particularly in such a challenging year,” said CEO David Darling. “Our rate of growth has been phenomenal and we all look forward to that continuing, both in Leamington Spa and internationally.

With so many vacant positions still open and big plans for 2021 and beyond, we can’t wait to welcome many more great people to help us release many more great games. Between remote working and the overseas studios we’re building, there are now more options than ever for the world’s best talent to work with us, which is very exciting indeed.”

Jithin Rosh, based in Bangalore, became Kwalee’s 100th team member. Joining as Marketing Artist & Animator, he commented:

“Working for a gaming studio like Kwalee is truly exciting! All my life I’ve been playing games – now I’m part of that process, making games with fun and talented people. I’m very happy to be here and to be Kwalee’s 100th employee!”

Michael Dugher Says “Safer Gambling Week” Will be a Success Despite Lockdowns

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Michael Dugher, CEO of the UK Betting and Gaming Council, has marked the beginning of “Safer Gambling Week” by saying that the industry is committed to safer gambling “not for one week but for all year round.”

He added that Covid-19 restrictions which have led to the closure of betting shops and casinos across the UK will not prevent the week from being a success.

Hundreds of betting shops in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland will be forced to keep their doors closed during Safer Gambling Week, which kicks off on November 19 and runs until November 25. The websites of the operators will promote safer gambling messages to customers through banner ads or pop ups throughout the week.

Mr Dugher said: “Safer Gambling Week is incredibly important, but safer gambling should not be seen by anyone as simply something we support for one week of the year – it is a commitment for every week of the year.

“Since being set up a year ago, the BGC has been at the forefront of efforts to drive up standards within our industry.

“Some 30 million people in Britain enjoy a flutter every year – whether that’s in betting shops, casinos, playing bingo, betting and gaming online or on the National Lottery – and the vast majority do so perfectly safely.

“However, one problem gambler is one too many, which is why we are delighted to support Safer Gambling Week.

“The various lockdowns across the UK will inevitably mean that Safer Gambling Week 2020 will be different from those which have gone before, but its central theme remains as important as ever and will still be heard loud and clear.

“We have already made huge strides in our first year, including a requirement that at least 20 per cent of all TV and radio betting advertising be safer gambling messaging, introducing cooling off periods on gaming machines, encouraging deposit limits, bringing in new ID and age verification checks, and massively increasing funding for research, education and treatment.

“But we are eager to go further – and look forward to working with the Government on the Gambling Review to introduce further changes that ensure that the millions of people who enjoy an occasional flutter do so enjoyably and safely.”

Mumbai Indians Revealed as UK’s Favourite IPL Team in 2020

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Mumbai Indians were the most popular IPL team in the UK in 2020 as interest in the T20 tournament surpassed that of 2019.

Rohit Sharma’s side was crowned champions of the IPL for the second year in a row and a record fifth time overall, but they have also enjoyed significant success off the pitch.

Research carried out by Cricket Bet India reveals that Mumbai was the most popular franchise among British fans, despite a total of 10 English players participating in the tournament and none of them featuring for the champions.

Rajasthan Royals had a strong English contingent with Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Tom Curran in the squad, and are unsurprisingly the second most popular side in the UK, with over 1000 monthly searches – a 9% decrease on Mumbai’s numbers.

Mumbai Indians are also the most popular side in India, with more than 13% as many searches on Google than their nearest rivals, CSK who remain popular with fans despite their initial struggles.

Research from Cricket Bet India also reveals that the IPL also enjoyed a 37% increase in online interest from the UK, with more fans searching Google for IPL terms during 2020 than 2019.

Previous studies from CBI showed how there were more TV viewers in the UK this year, and now the latest Google Trends research shows that there was more interest during the six-week tournament between September-November 2020 than March-May 2019.

Bacta to Ban Under-18s from Playing Category D Cash Fruit Machines

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Members of Bacta, the British amusement machine association, are going to ban under-18s from playing Category D cash fruit machines in seaside arcades and family entertainment centres.

Approved by Bacta Division 1 members at the organisation’s extraordinary general meeting this week, the proposal will be ratified at the annual general meeting on 26 November, before coming into effect from 1 March next year.

Bacta president James Miller said the new age restriction would send a message to customers that family seaside amusement arcades are safe environments for all families.

“Our members are all about providing fun and entertainment to the whole family as part of their annual holiday or day trip to the seaside,” James Miller said.

“We take social responsibility extremely seriously and although Category D cash payout fruit machines operate at very low stake and prize limits which are predominately played by adults for fun and nostalgia, we wanted to do our utmost and limit any potential risks to gambling harm,” James Miller added.

“Category D fruit machines have been long considered as part of the entertainment offer associated with seaside holidays and a trip to the arcade. Regulators in the past have therefore not imposed an age restriction on them,” John White, chief executive of Bacta, said.

“However, our members understand that perceptions change and we want to ensure that we do everything possible to protect players,” John White added.
