SBK to sponsor Lingfield Derby and Oaks Trials

SBK is delighted to announce that it is sponsoring next month’s Derby and Oaks Trials at Lingfield.

As part of its growing support for horse racing, SBK – the sportsbook app created by Smarkets – has sponsored the Derby and Oaks Trials at Lingfield Park on Saturday 7 May.

SBK will be the title sponsor of the day’s racing at Lingfield and is sponsoring four races on the card – including the listed SBK Derby Trial Stakes and SBK Oaks Trial Stakes, as well as the Group 3 SBK Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes. All four SBK-sponsored races will be broadcast by ITV Racing.

Last year’s running of the Derby Trial featured the winner of the Epsom showpiece, Adayar, while 2019 Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck also won the Lingfield trial.

SBK spokesperson Adam Baylis said: “It’s an honour for SBK to sponsor the Derby and Oaks Trials. In recent years we’ve seen the likes of Adayar and Anapurna feature in these races before going on to create history at Epsom, so we’re really excited to find out whether we’ve got future Classic winners on show again at Lingfield.”

Arena Racing Company’s David Leyden Dunbar added: “We are delighted to once again partner with SBK and welcome them to Lingfield Park for the first time for the Derby and Oaks Trials, which are the highlights of the calendar. The races have had a strong record in producing well-fancied Oaks and Derby contenders in recent years and we very much look forward to the 2022 renewal.”

Racing fans attending next Saturday’s meet can also pick up a complimentary copy of SBK’s in-depth Guide to the Flat Season, featuring multiple stable tours and tipsters’ horses to follow.

The Lingfield sponsorship is SBK’s latest move in racing after the sportsbook app partnered with Ascot for the SBK Clarence House Chase in January, and Doncaster for the SBK Lincoln meeting in March.

SBK boasts a roster of several racing ambassadors, including trainer George Boughey and jockeys Sean Levey (pictured below) and Nicola Currie.

University of Plymouth academics working with YGAM to improve education on Loot boxes

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Academics from the University of Plymouth are linking up with the Young Gamers and Gamblers Education Trust (YGAM), an award-winning education charity, to develop educational material focused on the financial and psychological harms related to Loot boxes and videogaming monetization.

A report by researchers at the universities of Plymouth and Wolverhampton, found that loot boxes are “structurally and psychologically akin to gambling” and that large numbers of children are opening loot boxes.

Loot boxes are video game-related purchases with a chance-based outcome, with half of the £700 million of total revenue generated in 2020 coming from just 5% of the buyers. Due to similarities with gambling, they have come under increasing scrutiny from media, academics and policymakers, leading to several jurisdictions – including The Netherlands, China and Australia – to introduce legislation on loot boxes. However, they are not covered by the 2005 Gambling Act in Great Britain, due to the lack of perceived monetary value of potential winnings. YGAM contributed to the UK Government’s call for evidence on loot boxes in 2020 with a decision on any new regulation expected this year.

Dr Helen Lloyd and Dr James Close are now working with the team at YGAM, to examine how best to translate the knowledge generated from their work into educational and interventional materials aimed at those most vulnerable to harms, including children, young people and at-risk cohorts such as those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

As well as the development of additional PSHE materials for schools, tailored educational approaches for specialist service providers will also be developed through a series of engagement and planning workshops, aimed to design, tailor and customize educational delivery for each context. Each group will comprise of up to 15 key individuals representing relevant organisations and community groups to learn, develop and create a knowledge exchange action plan facilitated by the University of Plymouth team.

Dr Helen Lloyd, who is leading the project, said “We are grateful to the University of Plymouth for funding us to work with YGAM and providers of services for vulnerable adults and children in the Southwest. Working in partnership with our wider stakeholders to use research generated knowledge helps us support the important work that they do, but also makes research relevant and timely. Working in this way we can tackle some of our most pressing societal issues whilst also creating local benefit.”

Kev Clelland, Director of Programme Engagement at YGAM, said, “We’re delighted to be working with the University of Plymouth team. The study supports our commitment to ensuring all our programmes are evidence-led and external evaluations are used to further enhance our work. The subjects of loot boxes and videogame monetization feature heavily in the public and political conversations on gambling and they also form a key part of our education workshops and our resources. The conclusions of this important piece of work will help to strengthen our approach.”

The collaboration continues YGAM’s commitment to an evidence-led approach to its education programmes aimed at preventing gambling and gaming harms. The charity provides training and resources to a range of professionals who have influence over young people including teachers, youth workers, health practitioners, university staff and community leaders.

The project will begin in May 2022.

GambleAware invests £2.5m into gambling harms prevention education programme across England and Wales

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Following a competitive tender, GambleAware is awarding £2.5m to GamCare, YGAM and partners, and Adferiad Recovery to expand The Gambling Education Hub Service across England and Wales as part of its commitment to help reduce gambling harms among young people
The Gambling Education Hub (The Hub) is a gambling education programme which includes toolkits, training and peer-based theatre performances, is aimed at professionals and volunteers who work with young people and families and at young people, parents and carers themselves.
The expansion follows an independent evaluation[1] of the GambleAware commissioned Scottish Gambling Education Hub (The Hub) by IFF Research, which reveals success of its early intervention and prevention methods leading to dramatic improvements in gambling harms awareness and understanding
The Hub, which is primarily for practitioners, educators and youth workers, uses early intervention and prevention methods to reduce gambling harms among children and young people, working holistically within local communities, to promote a safer environment – especially for those most at risk

GambleAware has today announced the expansion of its Gambling Education Hubs across England and Wales, following a successful pilot in Scotland. The Hubs, which help prevent gambling harms among young people through early intervention and education, resulted in 92% of practitioners from the Scottish Hub saying they felt confident in identifying the signs of gambling harm, compared to just 35% pre-training. The Hubs also resulted in more than eight in ten young people from the Scottish Hub saying they were more aware of the consequences of gambling and 84% felt confident about where to turn to for support if needed.

This investment from GambleAware comes at a critical period, with the Hubs designed to reach all communities across the nations by engaging at a local level in a way that central Government sometimes cannot. Young people are increasingly exposed to easily accessible gambling through the growth of online gaming and social media. GambleAware research published in 2020 showed that 94% of 11-17-year-olds in Great Britain had been exposed to gambling adverts in the last month, seeing six adverts on average[2]. This data directly led to recent caps and restrictions imposed on industry advertisers to further curb their appeal to children and youths.

The Scottish Hub delivered gambling education to almost 3,000 professionals and volunteers working with young people, as well as young people themselves, parents, and carers. GambleAware partnered with Scotland’s national youthwork organisation Fast Forward[3] to deliver the locally focused prevention programme. An independent evaluation of this project by IFF Research found that the Hub:

  • improved knowledge and awareness of youth gambling harms and gambling education among practitioners, and
  • reached over 15,800 young people resulting in increased awareness of the consequences of gambling and confidence in asking for support.

Building on this success, GambleAware has today announced the award of a £2.5m grant to expand the Hub Service to both England and Wales. Following a competitive tender process, the grant has been won by GamCare, in partnership with YGAM, ARA, Aquarius, Beacon, Breakeven and Neca to carry out the work in England, and by Adferiad Recovery, which will carry out the work in Wales.

Anna Hemmings, Chief Executive of GamCare, said: “We are delighted to be receiving this grant to deliver gambling education hubs across England. We work in collaboration with a number of organisations who bring unparalleled experience of working with young people around these issues, including; Young Gamers and Gamblers Education Trust (YGAM), Addiction Recovery Agency (ARA), Aquarius, Beacon, Breakeven and Neca, to deliver Education Hubs across England.

Both GamCare and our partners passionately believe that information on the risks associated with gambling and gaming should be a key part of young people’s education, gaining parity with other risky behaviours such as drugs and alcohol.

We are looking forward to building on the successes of our work with young people, their parents and professionals in a new programme aimed at increasing visibility of both local and national education and support, and to working with GambleAware and our partners towards our shared aspiration of reducing gambling-related harms for young people.”

Leon Marsh, Director of Hospital & Residential Services at Adferiad Recovery said: “We look forward to working with GambleAware on this great initiative to help reduce gambling-related harm caused to young people and to provide comprehensive training, education and resources to key stakeholders to reduce the risks associated with gambling addiction. We were delighted to hear that we had been selected to be the providers of Wales’s Gambling Education Hub and are looking forward to replicating the success of the project currently being undertaken in Scotland. Our extensive knowledge and experience in young people services puts us in a good position to be able to effectively deliver this project in Wales, and we are excited to be able to offer young people this valuable service.”

GamCare, together with YGAM and other partners, brings over nine years’ experience delivering services for thousands of young people, including relevant skills, local knowledge, and stakeholder networks. Meanwhile, Adferiad Recovery is an industry leader in the fields of addiction, mental health, and young people’s services. Each organisation is best placed to carry out the expansion of the Hub Service in their own region. The new Hubs will also reflect differences in curriculums, languages, regions, need and demand, and political and other contexts, specific to each nation.

Zoë Osmond, CEO at GambleAware, said: “At a time when young people are increasingly exposed to gambling, the delivery of local focused programs for gambling education and prevention of harms has never been more important. We hope to see the positive short-term impacts from the Scottish Education Hub’s activities replicated in our newly commissioned English and Welsh Education Hubs, and we are excited to have awarded this grant to these two highly experienced organisations.

“As the lead commissioner working to prevent gambling harms, GambleAware is committed to working with local organisations and stakeholders to fund and establish tailored, best-practice prevention programmes. With young people in the UK now growing up being widely exposed to gambling marketing and advertising, these projects represent a meaningful step towards delivering a society where all children and young people are protected from the risks of gambling related harms.”

The Hubs across all nations will incorporate input from people with lived experience of gambling harms in the development of training content, service delivery, and any supporting tools or resources. GambleAware expects that equality, diversity and inclusion policy and procedures to be at the heart of the service design, provision, and day to day operations.

UK Gambling Commission sets new rules on action for at risk customers

Reading Time: 2 minutes

NEW rules ensuring online gambling businesses do more to identify and take action to protect consumers at risk of harm have been introduced by the Gambling Commission.

The new rules, which come into effect on 12 September 2022, are stronger and more prescriptive, requiring operators to:

  • monitor a specific range of indicators1, as a minimum, to identify gambling harm
  • flag indicators of harm and take action in a timely manner
  • implement automated processes for strong indicators of harm
  • prevent marketing and the take-up of new bonuses for at risk customers
  • evaluate their interactions and ensure they interact with consumers at least at the level of problem gambling for the relevant activity
  • evidence their customer interaction evaluation to the Gambling Commission during routine casework
  • comply with these requirements at all times, this includes ensuring the compliance of third-party providers.

New guidance, which operators are required to take account of, will be issued in June to help them understand and comply with the requirements. We will engage with operators to enable the guidance to take account of queries we receive about the requirements following publication.

Gambling Commission Chief Executive, Andrew Rhodes, said: “Time and time again our enforcement cases show that some operators are still not doing enough to prevent gambling harm. These new rules, developed following an extensive consultation, make our expectations even more explicit.

“We expect operators to identify and tackle gambling harms with fast, proportionate and effective action and we will not hesitate to take tough action on operators who fail to do so.”

The strengthened requirements follow a consultation which was launched to address failings the Commission continued to see among online gambling operators. Although capable of identifying customers who may be harmed by gambling, operators were not always doing so or acting quickly enough. The Commission received approximately 13,000 responses to the consultation and call for evidence. All responses to the proposals were carefully considered to ensure proportionate, robust changes were made.

In the next phase of our programme of work to make online gambling fairer and safer, the Commission will proceed as planned and consult further on identifying customers who are financially vulnerable and tackling significant unaffordable gambling. Further updates will be provided when the consultation launches.

We will continue to work closely with DCMS and take account of the Government’s Gambling Act Review. Our broader programmes of work, focused on identifying customers at risk of harm will also continue, including close engagement with the BGC and ICO on the ‘single customer view’ pilot.

Trustly launches Trustly Express in Finland, Netherlands, Sweden and the UK – enabling payments twice as fast

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Trustly, the leading global payments platform for digital account-to-account transactions, launches Trustly Express in Finland, Netherlands, Sweden and the UK. Trustly Express reduces the number of steps at checkout for returning users for an even better, and faster, experience.

Trustly continues to take steps towards its vision to power the shift to a cardless society by making account-to-account (“A2A”) payments a new global standard, and the launch of Trustly Express further strengthens this move. Trustly Express enables merchants to significantly improve the payment experience for their end users, driving increased conversion and customer loyalty.

Built on top of the bank’s PSD2 APIs, Trustly Express reduces the number of steps at checkout for returning users. Instead of a regular experience, typically with a five step flow including two so called Strong Customer Authentications* (SCA:s) where the consumer identifies itself, Trustly Express brings the flow down to a single payment confirmation page and only one SCA. This allows returning consumers to complete their debit payment twice as fast with the SCA step typically being biometric based (FaceID or a Fingerprint becoming a standard offering amongst banks in Europe).

Johan Tjärnberg, Group CEO of Trustly, comments: Launching Trustly Express is another key step forward in our offensive plan to deliver superior value to our merchants with the key aim to enable them to further accelerate their growth. Being one of the first movers since A2A’s inception we are committed to continue being a game changer in our industry.

Fakenham, which is proud to honour The Prince of Wales as its patron, stages 12 fixtures throughout the year and is renowned for its competitive racing and excellent prize money.

Fakenham will become a valued part of the Racing TV output, which, this year, will now include racing from 36 British racecourses and all 26 Irish racecourses.

“We have an excellent relationship with The Racing Partnership, At The Races and Sky Sports Racing which goes back many years and we are very grateful to the many successful years we have partnered with them. However, my board of directors feel now is the right time for Fakenham to make a change and we believe joining the RMG family will ensure Fakenham will continue to provide good quality grass roots National Hunt racing with good prize money.”

gambling-business-group,-ceo,-peter-hannibal:-‘every-great-gaming-innovation-has-been-seen-if-not-launched-at-ice-london.’

Gambling Business Group, CEO, Peter Hannibal: ‘Every great gaming innovation has been seen if not launched at ICE London.’

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Peter Hannibal, Chief Executive of the strategic body the Gambling Business Group, has described ICE, which takes place next week at ExCeL London (12th/13th/14th April), as being an ‘unbeliveable source of inspiration and an unparalleled shop window for the international gambling industry.‘

Hannibal, who will be attending his 40th edition of ICE and its predecessor ATEI, explained: “The gambling industry is one of the fastest adopters of new technology and ICE is the event at which innovators unashamedly choose to launch their newest and most progressive products and services safe in the knowledge that they will be able to engage with a truly international audience of gambling industry buyers. As a consequence I think it’s fair to say that the majority of great gambling innovations have been seen if not launched at ICE London.”

However, the importance of ICE goes beyond just the launch of innovative new gambling products and services: “From my first show back in the early 1980’s ATEI, as it was then, was the place where the industry met, networked and educated themselves as to what else was going on” stated Peter Hannibal. “Much of the discussions surrounded pending legislation changes and I’m certain that will be the case next week when there is sure to be intense speculation on the forthcoming UK Government Whitepaper on gambling reform.”

“Initiatives such as The Consumer Protection Zone, that Clarion introduced to the ICE show floor in 2018, are great examples of how the industry is working in partnership with safer gambling and treatment charities – a progressive partnership which helps explain why problem gambling rates in the UK as calculated by the Gambling Commission sit at their record low of 0.3%. This industry is at its best when it is able to meet face-to-face and discuss products, consumers, trends and the future direction of travel for gambling. I believe the bounce-back for the land-based gambling sector begins at ICE London.”
