Boomerang Digital make first acquisition with IHL Tech joining the UK industry’s newest brand

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Boomerang Digital, the new streamlined gaming solutions business created by Andrew Ludlow and his partners from Air Dice has got off to a perfect start announcing its first strategic acquisition within a week of launch.

The first acquisition to join the growing Boomerang Digital family is IHL, the compliance and self-exclusion innovator established by Peter Hannibal, Howard Gant and Paul Harris in 2016. IHL join fellow technology brands NRM, ISD and Big Deal Games all of which have been incorporated under the Boomerang Digital umbrella.

Outlining what makes IHL such a ‘perfect fit’ for the business, Andrew Ludlow said: “It’s all about the three P’s – namely people, philosophy and the IHL platform. Factor in the ability to leverage IHL’s skills, knowledge and experience into other parts of the Boomerang business and it’s very clear that this represents a strategically important acquisition. The equity holders boast relationships, networks and connections established over three decades – a history which has its own unique value.”

He added: “Compliance, which is where IHL’s core strengths sit, is fundamental to the regulatory framework our customers operate under and is a key requirement not just in the UK but across jurisdictions where gaming is legal or poised to become legal. Significantly, IHL’s customer portfolio includes leading consumer-facing brands across the Arcade, Bingo, Casino, Holiday Park and Motorway Service Area sectors. I believe that as part of Boomerang IHL will be able to achieve its targets faster and in a more efficient manner. Philosophically we are very much aligned and I look forward to working alongside Peter, Howard and Paul as they write the next chapter in the IHL story.”

Reflecting on the development IHL Chairman Peter Hannibal said: “I think this represents great news for our customers, for the growing team at Boomerang Digital and of course for the IHL team. Being integrated within the Boomerang Digital business will release the potential that’s in the business courtesy of having access to a bigger team and to greater resource.

“Being part of a bigger but still independent enterprise will undoubtedly accelerate business growth. It is a wonderful opportunity for us to work alongside Andrew and the rest of the Boomerang team and a fantastic way to enter 2024. We can’t wait to meet with our loyal customer-base in the New Year and share the exciting strategies and plans that we will be implementing as part of the Boomerang Digital family.”

Providing an insight to what he believes will be the key topics of the day, John Bollom noted: “The Convention will cover what are the most important changes facing Bacta members including issues that will have a long-term impact on their businesses.”

“The Gambling Review and subsequent consultations cover key issues in particular cashless payments, changes to the 80:20 rule and restrictions on Cat D cash pay-out fruit machines.

“On top of that we have the Statutory Levy proposals, the introduction of an industry Ombudsman, a review of technical standards and our own request for an increase in stakes and prizes.

“Outside of the White Paper we have the introduction of a B2B tariff with PRS/PPL and the impact of illegally operated streaming services on our music operator members.”

The first Convention to take place following the restructure of the UK trade association, John Bollom will use his Convention address to update members on the progress that’s been made. He confirmed: “I am pleased with changes to our Governance which I believe puts us in a much better position to respond to these important issues as they arise and to drive the industry forward with policies that benefit all.

“These discussions and reports to Convention are of great importance to every Bacta member and the input and opinions of the membership are vital in helping to shape a future looking organisation. I hope members will be able to find the time to be a part of this really important annual event.”

UKGC Publishes 2023 Young People and Gambling Report

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has published its 2023 Young People and Gambling Report – an annual study which helps understand children’s and young people’s exposure to, and involvement in, all types of gambling.

The research was conducted in schools, with pupils completing online self-completion surveys in class. The study collected data from a sample of 3453 11 to 16 year olds as in previous years and, for the first time 17 year olds, attending academies, maintained and independent schools in England, Scotland and Wales.

This year:

  • 26% of respondents spent their own money on some form of gambling in the last 12 months, compared with 31% in 2022
  • excluding arcade gaming machines which young people can play legally 4% of respondents spent their own money on regulated gambling (age restricted products), compared with 5% in 2022
  • 7% of respondents were identified as problem gamblers by the youth adapted DSM-IV-MR-J screen compared with 0.9% in 2022
  • 5% of respondents were identified as at-risk gamblers compared with 2.4% in 2022
  • 55% had seen gambling adverts offline, compared to 66% in 2022, and 53% had seen adverts online, compared to 63% in 2022.

The Commission requires gambling operators to have strong protections in place to prevent children from accessing products illegally. This means the most common types of gambling activity that young people spent their own money on were legal or did not feature age restricted products:

  • playing arcade gaming machines such as penny pusher or claw grab machines (19%)
  • placing a bet for money between friends or family (11%)
  • playing cards with friends or family for money (5%).
  • Protecting children and young people from harm remains a priority for the Commission and it is working hard to implement relevant proposals by Government in its Gambling Act Review White Paper.

This includes examining strengthening age verification in premises by considering responses to proposals to:

  • remove the current exemption from carrying out age verification test purchasing for the smallest gambling premises
  • changing the good practice code to say that licensees should have procedures that require their staff to check the age of any customer who appears to be under 25 years of age, rather than under 21 years of age.

As part of the White Paper, the Commission is also examining staff supervision in some premises. The Commission will explore through consultation the evidence around premises where there is not normally direct staff supervision (such as Adult Gaming Centres in service stations) and consider whether existing requirements effectively prevent underage gambling.

PA Betting Services cements its position as preferred partner to trailblazers with CopyBet deal

PA Betting Services (PABS) has agreed a deal to provide horse racing content to innovative United Kingdom (UK) sportsbook CopyBet.

CopyBet is a relative newcomer to the UK sports betting market, having launched its sportsbook offering in the second half of 2021. As well as offering a range of sports betting markets, it also has a unique tipster offering with players able to automatically copy the bets of leading tipsters or even become tipsters themselves.

The partnership will see horse racing offered to CopyBet’s player base for the first time with its players now able to access a competitive offering of UK racecards, race-day fixed odds and results, all powered by the market-leading racing distribution platform of PABS.

“With our own roots firmly planted in tipping and sports copywriting, it was refreshing to work with an operator that has such a unique way of boosting and rewarding both tipsters and ‘copiers’,” the Head of New Business for PABS, Richard Duncan, said.

“According to Gambling Commission figures, thoroughbred racing accounts for about one-third of all online sports wagering in the UK, so it was an obvious move for us to begin offering the sport to our player base,” the Business Development Director for CopyBet, Anton Ivanov, said.

“PABS’ broad range of content, coupled with its flexible commercial approach, enabled us to feel completely confident about our horse racing launch. Its flexibility and existing integrations with our technology providers made it the perfect choice for the supply of racing to our brand. We are now also looking to launch greyhound racing at a later date.”

The Copybet announcement comes just weeks after PABS was chosen as partner to up-and-coming sportsbook Midnite, which was also offering racing for the first time.
